I love the theory that Diarmid was actually Eönwë, come to get Sauron/Mairon back home if only he passed the test

What if this man, Diarmid, can be interpreted as Eonwë in disguise?

He says his family were servants of kings, and he attempts to counsel Sauron in the ways of goodness — ultimately to be rejected when the bonds of Morgoth were too strong.

His heraldry bears an image of a bird; Eonwë is the herald of Manwë, the lord of the airs and all flying creatures.

He offers Sauron passage to an unnamed place across the Sea where there is another life waiting for him if he only turn toward it.

Sauron follows him initially, but ultimately cannot bring himself to commit to the sacrifices repentance demands.
