Dice Review! 9/10, would buy again

I recently bought dice from @b-dreadful (the orange ones in these pictures) and they're awesome! This is only the fourth set of dice Bee has made, but they clearly have skill and, as a bonus, they had great customer service and touched base with me regularly throughout the production process!

While the dice do have a few mistakes (like the bubble on the 1 side of the D20) I tested them over 200 rolls and found that the bubble didn't mess up the dice's randomness at all, it's purely cosmetic. It gives them character that I like from a hand crafted die. Additionally, when Bee saw the bubble in the D20, they sent me an extra D20 (the gold one) free of charge! The red dice in this picture are chessex dice, and are there for size comparison. Bee's dice are a little bigger and have sharp edges, which makes them fun and different from the other dice I've bought.

Overall, I'd give Bee a 9.5/10 because the bubble isn't great, but they warned me before I bought that I might not have perfect dice (because I was buying their fourth ever set) and even though I knew I wouldn't get perfect dice, still sent me a bonus die free of charge. I'd definitely buy from Bee again!

So... this is 1.) a dice palette of sorts, but also, under the cut, 2.) my full review of the Kraken kickstarter and my thoughts on the company and the situation surrounding it.

Alright, so I know it’s been a hot minute since I got my kickstarter dice, but I haven’t had the chance to sit down and do my full thoughts on the matter; the good, the bad, and the ugly. 

I first found out about Kraken when the KS launched and I was extremely excited! The dice looked gorgeous and I knew I wanted in. So I backed rather generously; I wanted a lot of the different sets and ended up splurging a bit. I wasn’t worried too much for a long time since I knew everything was still in production, and didn’t think it was too weird when they were launching other sets as well. 

I have bought many Kraken sets while waiting for my KS sets; a lot of my collection is Kraken. For the most part, I love my Kraken dice. But then I noticed the extreme fomo around the company. That’s not how companies should be run, in my genuine opinion. It wasn’t as prominent at first, because it was a relatively small company launched forward by a very successful kickstarter campaign. I once tried to buy a set from them and it sold out while I had the set in my shopping cart; that was within six seconds of it launching. I was always on time for their releases because I knew I probably wouldn’t get another chance to get the set, since they rarely do relaunches. As a customer, this is very upsetting, as I’m sure you can imagine. Especially considering how loyal of a customer I was and how much I regarded them as a quality dice maker. 

So, after the dice shipping out MONTHS after we were told it would (it was set to be finished in February of this year and I didn’t get my dice until mid August with little to no updates or information). The quality of my dice was genuinely alright. I like most of my dice from the kickstarter! I’ll make that clear. I disliked how the ethereal/swirled dice came out; they barely had any color. But the layered dice were really great and I do enjoy most of them. 

Please don’t get me wrong; I very much have enjoyed many of my sets from Kraken. However, I will NOT be a customer of theirs any longer because I have shopped with plenty of other dice shops and manufacturers that were much more professional and don’t rely on the fear of their customers to funnel money into their pockets. I think they’re highly unprofessional in the way their “customer service” deals with clients and customers; specifically when it comes to customer complaints and kickstarter backlash. The owners of the company seem childish and throw tantrums and I don’t want to support that, honestly. I highly recommend checking into Ice Cream Dice (he has the shop closed now for maintenence and to actually fulfill his own kickstarter, instead of tossing out new set after new set) as well as DarkElfDice and Die Hard Dice since they’re very organized and thankful for the customers they have, actually having stock available and being gracious and kind. 

So, end notes; I love my dice I got from my kickstarter and I’m very glad it was money that I didn’t just throw away (especially considering Kraken’s repulsive kickstarter refund policies...)  and that I actually enjoy my dice for the most part. However, if you want to do some more digging into some people less fortunate than I, I recommend looking through their Kickstarter comments or the posts on Kraken’s FB page or the twitter hashtag #HoldKrakenResponsible. There’s also someone on twitter who goes over a lot more of Kraken’s issues than I do, so you can find their twitter here. They also have a post on reddit here. They elaborate much better than I could hope to. Because of reasons included in these sources and my own experiences, I personally don’t recommend supporting Kraken much longer. I will be posting pics of my dice; because I bought them, spent money on them, and enjoy them. I am not meaning to “advertise” for them in the slightest because it’s more of a hassle than it’s worth. I simply want to take pretty pictures of dice I spent money on.

Ice Cream Dice from the kickstarter have arrived! The matte rainbow dice are absolutely adorable.

The matte kiwi and regular kiwi... not so much. Well. They're cute, but they have a handful of issues with numbering, bubbling, and surface defects that look like little white pock marks. The matte kiwi is very hard to see, and is more frosted than matte. I believe the frosted style will wear off with use, but we'll have to see. I don't mind it as much on the rainbow dice, but I wouldn't buy the "matte" again on a see through dice.

I still like these sets, of course and I know the kickstarter had some rough patches. I'd just go back and change what I ordered, in hindsight.

Do you want a set of confetti borealis? Well...that’s probably not going to happen, but here’s a really close alternative! Sparkle Sparkle Dream Sand by Lucky Hand Dice is, imo, the closest thing to Chessex confetti borealis currently available for purchase. LHD is running a crowdfunding campaign here on their site and Sparkle Sparkle Dream Sand is one of the available sets!

Their dice are 100% handmade from start to finish and the entire company is run by a kickass gamer and her husband. They’re hoping to use this campaign to expand their business to meet demand, because right now they’re just not able to make dice fast enough to go around. the red parts of the dice have this really pretty subtle shimmer in the sunlight that i didn't expect it was a v pleasant surprise!!

the inking was a lil spotty on some of the dice but i am planning on reinking them either w a more metallic gold or possibly silver anyways so it's not a huge downside at all (honestly it's probably not even noticeable to most ppl i am just really particular on inking lol)

i reallyyyy really like the lil dragon logo and the fact that it's on all of the dice and not just the d20 it makes the whole set feel much more unique

there's also a dragon dice bag that matches the dice which is super cool??

Sooo! I wanted to share this review with you all! I recently bought and inked a set from HalZucati on etsy! This shop makes a ton of dice from neat materials, like rare stone, wood and aluminum! But they also offer their ‘Perfect Plastic’ line of precision dice. These dice are larger than most and have clean sharp lines! They are made from opaque plastics and come inked or un-inked and polished or raw. I went for a raw, uninked set. I did a bit of sanding and clean up, then used acrylic paint to ink them. The surface holds paint really well and was easy to apply, but clean up got a little messy, as some sides are smooth and others are more rough. I plan to use some paint remover to really clean things up later. : ) All in all, very satisfied! I love the chance to ink opaques in colors other than white or black and I love the large size and hefty nature of these dice. Def check them out! Help support the blog?
