Stater of Lampsakos with infant Herakles strangling snakes (Unknown artist, ~350–330 B.C.)
The golden coin seen above comes from the Greek classical period and depicts Herkales strangling snakes in each hand. Herkales is an alternative/Greek spelling for Heracles, who was one of Zeus’s many sons.
Nude Study of Thomas E. McKeller (John Singer Sargent, ~1917-20)
John Singer Sargent was a 19th/early 20th century American artist best known for his oil painting portraits. “He updated a centuries-old tradition by using vibrant Impressionistic brushstrokes and untraditional compositional solutions in order to capture his sitters' character and even reputation.” The painting above was never displayed while Sargent was alive, and has led some historians to believe that Sargent heavily compartmentalized his life while he was alive.
Nude male effigy whistle (Unknown artist, ~600–750 A.D.)
The ceramic Mayan statue seen above comes from the late classical period and depicts a male figure with his arms raised. While it may not be obvious at first glance, this statue also has a practical function as it is also a whistle with “its mouth piece being the man’s anus.”
Untitled (William Chadwick, Unknown date)
William Chadwick was a late 19th/20th century British artist who ultimately studied and practiced in the United States for most of his life. While many of Chadwick’s most iconic pieces are paintings that display “a light, sunny color palette and showcase genre scenes of city and country life,” he also demonstrated range as an artist. This is exemplified by the sketch above which has a much more realistic and somber tone than his paintings.
Study of a Nude Man (Unknown French artist, ~1810-20)
Study of a Nude Man is an early 19th century French painting in a style/pose typical of what was being produced in French art schools of the time. While there are some ideas of the specific origins of the painting, nothing is definitive.
Self Portrait (Baccio Bandinelli, ~1545)
Baccio Bandinelli was a 16th century Italian Renaissance painter who worked in several mediums including painting and sculpting. Much of Bandinelli’s career was spent creating commissioned pieces for the famous Medici family, however critics of the time frequently disliked his pieces. The oil painting above is a self portrait of Bandinelli with one of his pieces.
