New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who wore a headscarf to a Muslim police officer’s funeral, swatted back this weekend at Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who seemed to mock her in a tweet. “I wore a headscarf to honor a fallen Muslim NYPD officer at his funeral,” Hochul wrote Saturday on X, formerly Twitter. “Respecting a grieving family’s faith is ‘wut’ leaders and anyone with basic decency would do.” Hochul’s post was in response to Cruz, who on Friday reposted a photo of Hochul at the funeral with the caption, “Um, wut?” [...]

After Hochul’s response, Cruz responded, writing, “I agree. You should wear a hijab every day because you are so damn decent. Never mind the rights of women in New York…not your concern.” It’s unclear what Cruz meant by his “rights of women in New York” comment, and his office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Officer Didarul Islam, 36, a Muslim immigrant from Bangladesh and a married father of two kids with a third on the way, was shot and killed in Manhattan by a suspect who carried an AR-15-style rifle. He was one of the four people killed by the suspect, Shane Tamura, 27, a U.S. citizen who drove from Las Vegas to unleash death in a midtown Manhattan skyscraper near the end of the workday. Let me stress that the shooting suspect was a U.S. citizen, not an immigrant, and he was not Middle Eastern, Indian, or a Palestinian Why does this matter? Because MAGA bigots never miss an opportunity to use a tragedy to advance their bigoted, hateful agenda.

But in Loomer’s twisted, depraved, conspiratorial thinking, all Muslims share a collective Borg hive mind that has the ultimate goal of replacing the Constitution with Sharia and terrorizing non-Muslims. What does this shooting have to do with the Free Palestine movement? From what we know right now, absolutely nothing. However, Loomer’s post is instructive because it gives you a peek into the poisoned logic of hatemongers who see entire groups of people as problems that must be eliminated. [...] “So many people in the city who don’t belong,” he writes. No need for hoods and dog whistles with Donald Trump in the White House. This is the naked, shameless racism and nativism that animates Stephen Miller and a large part of the MAGA base that believes in the white supremacist “replacement theory.” Also, why do these MAGA cowards vacation in NYC and California if they hate our cities and states so much? If you’re so scared, then go chill out in Trump-voting states, which have higher crime rates than blue states.

Far-right Islamophobic numbskulls such as Charlie Kirk and Laura Loomer exploit the NYC shooting to spread anti-Islam hatred, despite the fact Muslim NYPD officer Didarul Islam was killed by an active shooter.
