“As seen in the tragedy at our school, poor communication between mental healthcare providers and law enforcement may have contributed to a disturbed person with murderous tendencies and intentions entering a school and gunning down 17 people in cold blood.
We must improve this channel of communication. To do so, privacy laws should be amended. That will allow us to prevent people who are a danger to themselves or to others from purchasing firearms. That could help prevent tragedies such as the Parkland massacre.”
This is part of the Parkland kids’ proposed gun reform. This is basically allowing law enforcement to have more access to information concerning mentally ill people. This is not okay. I understand the desire to report potentially violent people, but allowing this to happen could potentially cause more mistreatment of mentally ill people. This part of their proposed gun laws further demonizes mentally ill people and perpetuates the false idea that mentally ill people are inherently more violent than those without mental illnesses.
This is the only thing coming from them that I am not in support of. Privacy laws should not be amended to discriminate against mentally ill people.
