Re: Confusion on Hoodoo Being Open or Closed
Some of us black rootworkers do feel that rootwork/hoodoo is a closed tradition. That’s not an uneducated or wrong opinion to have nor is it a confusion between the difference of hoodoo/rootwork (an African American folk magic tradition) and Vodou (an ATR practiced all over the world).
There is no one “official” hoodoo authority, so technically there isn’t a single “official” answer to the question of whether or not hoodoo is closed or open or somewhere in between. If black folks wanna teach white people hoodoo, that’s their choice. If nonblack people are going to practice hoodoo, I can share my opinion on that and why, but no, I can’t actually stop them nor is it my job to stop them.
As a black rootworker, my opinion is that hoodoo belongs to Africana and Afro-Latinx people, and I respect others who have a different opinion. It’s okay for there to be different opinions about this in our community. Let’s all respect each other and not assume that just because someone has a different opinion that they don’t know what they are talking about. Ashe o friends
