I honestly don’t know whether I want to cry or smile right now. On the one hand, we’re beaming from ear to ear now that two new songs have arrived from Nashville trio BASECAMP. On the other hand, the treats come with an unexpected announcement of the band’s breakup or hiatus (hopefully the latter). The three piece has been enrapturing us with their ambient electronica and smooth cooing for over three years. We’ve caught them live several times; the very last time was a jaw dropping performance at Popscene last year that utilized a ridiculous stage setup featuring a magnificent light cube. In the dark of the venue, illuminated by ever shifting patterns from the cube, BASECAMP was nothing short of phenomenal, riveting us with their dark and evocative, emotive and aching electronica. At least they’ve given us some parting gifts before disappearing into the good night. I Was Here is a moody shuffling amalgamation of sable house, twilight R&B, dark future bass, and gritty garage featuring Sophia Black on vocals and San Diego's Different Sleep on additional production duties. Shelter completes BASECAMP’s goodbye EP. It’s an urgent pressing, restless and shifty electronic piece with some Kaytranada-esque hip hop/R&B vibes with some James Blake-like vocal loops. Stream Shelter below.
Here’s BASECAMP’s message that they released alongside their two track I Was Here EP: “Friends, The last few years have been incredible. We’ve felt so much love and had so many great experiences, and we’re grateful for all of it. For now, we’ll be stepping away from the project to explore some new territory, but we wanted to release these two songs as a small thank you to everyone that’s supported us thru the years. You guys have kept us going. We love you all.” Please come back, when you’re ready. We love you, too.
