The behavior of Inconel 600 in Reducing and Oxidizing Environments
Inconel 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy designed to be used at high temperatures of up to 2000˚F (1093˚C). The presence of nickel in high quantity makes the alloy extremely resistant in reducing environments. The alloy 600 can also be used in magnesium chloride solutions due to its exceptional resistance power to chloride stress corrosion cracking.
While the presence of chromium makes it resistant in weaker oxidizing conditions. It also bestows it with superior corrosion resistance in acidic environments when compared to pure nickel element and lets the material to remain corrosion resistant even in a reducing state thus displaying superior corrosion resistance properties in alkaline solutions.
Hence, it can be concluded that Inconel 600 provides an amount of resistance to the reducing environments while the chromium content of the material provides it resistance power in the weaker oxidizing environments.
Inconel 600 is used in many industries like the heat treating industry, chemical industry, electrical industry, nuclear and aeronautical fields.

General Properties
It is an adaptable nickel-chromium-iron alloy that can be confidently used in extremely high temperatures and for service related to corrosion resistance. The high nickel content also guarantees that the alloy will be providing corrosion resistance feature with a lot of organic and inorganic compounds. The chromium content is said to resist sulfur compounds.
Its ability to resist high temperature makes it extremely suitable for applications that require carburization resistance or in sulfur environments at moderate temperatures. Being non-magnetic, this alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but only by cold working. It can be easily welded and processed by applying standard shop fabrication practices. Inconel 600 can be used in a variety of corrosion resisting applications.
Welding
Inconel 600 can be easily welded by using most of the standard processes. In its case, the post-weld heat treatment is not required. On scrubbing with a stainless steel wire brush after welding, you can get rid of the heat tint and produce a surface area that does not need additional conserving.
Machining
The machinability of Inconel 600 is a little better than alloy 304 but not as good as alloy 303. It is recommended that the alloy should be machined in an annealed condition. Since the alloy is prone to work–hardening, low cutting speeds must be used and the cutting tool should be kept engaged all throughout. Cutting in depth is necessary to avoid any kind of contact with the previous work-hardened zone.
Common applications of the alloy
Some of the common applications of Inconel 600 are in heat exchangers, nuclear power plants, industrial alkali and acid equipment, industrial chemical evaporators, vacuum furnace fixtures, food and chemical processing equipment, parts of a heat treatment furnace, paper mill and alkaline digesters, catalyst regenerators in the production of petrochemicals, etc.
