DigiMonday - PORCUPAMON
(Adult Level/Virus Attribute/Puppet Type)
One of the weirder-looking Digis we've covered on this blog so far, Porcupamon holds the rather sad distinction of being, to my knowledge, the only Digimon species that's canonically endangered; apparently driven from more habitable regions of the Digital World by stronger Digimon, Porcupamon populations are said to have been forced to take up residence in the Dark Area (essentially Digimon Hell,) and have taken on their current form to endure the area's inhospitable conditions. Its design reflects this; with stitches and tears lining its body, sharp metal protruding from its interior and a weird little re-breather running between its muzzle and chest, it does have a distinctly grungy, unhealthy, beaten-up look to it! It's the sort of creature you'd want to give it a comforting hug to if doing so didn't look like it'd be a major tetanus risk...

While its design certainly fits the part of a weathered resident of a hostile world, Porcupamon oddly doesn't have much in common with its namesake, a porcupine (if anything it looks more like KAWS' take on a Monzaemon.) It's official description does mention that it's able to use sharp hairs on its body to defend itself when threatened (which is also true of real porcupines; porcupine quills are essentially hardened hairs covered in an additional keratin sheath, and are even soft at birth to prevent young porcupettes from accidentally injuring their mother,) but that's about where the similarities end. Early concept art of Porcupamon may explain this; it appears that Porcupamon's desgin changed considerably during its development, with earlier designs including an adorable demonic bear-like 'mon resembling Phascomon and some sort of...sneaker-wearing badger man? Huh.
(As much as I enjoy Porcupamon's freaky final design, I would also be interested to see more of the distinct style of freak that is that design on the right. What a creature... Image source here.)
Porcupamon was first introduced in 2004 and made its debut in the original Digimon card game. Since then its appearances have been largely limited to the franchise's various subsequent card games where it's typically treated as an evolution for Phascomon and a pre-evolution for Astamon (both of which are also connected to the Dark Area by their official description, and which share clear design similarities with eachother even if they seem to have little to do with Porcupamon.) Outside of the card games its appearances have been fairly few-and-far-between, even though its fellow Dark Area residents have appeared semi-frequently in other pieces of Digimon media. It seems poor Porcupamon really can't catch a break…
Favourite Porcupamon Art: This card from the Digimon TCG. As much as I tend to gravitate to cuter, simpler creature designs overall I do appreciate Digimon's ability to be pretty spooky when it wants to be...
