Digital Exposure: Social Networking
JN 229 – Blog Entry #4
As university students, the most of us have a Facebook page, or a twitter account.
Facebook and twitter is a social networking website that allows for individuals to post status on what they are doing, pictures and other personal information that may be seen as self-surveillance. Kingsley Dennis in "Keeping a Close Watch - The Rise of Self-Surveillance and the Threat of Digital Exposure" explains, “these different digital technologies have given rise to increased occurrences of self-surveillance and forms of ‘virtual vigilantism’”.
This ‘virtual vigilantism’ increases issues of not only self-surveillance but surveillance as well. Anyone can know how we feel, what we are doing or how we look by a click of a button. This creates a line between freedoms, and increases a fear of freedom and lack of privacy. Nowadays, a cell-phone, camera or video recorder can capture an image or footage and transmit the images as quickly as taking it by sharing it on a social networking page instantly.
Websites like Facebook and twitter, which have cell-phone application for smartphones allow for you to update your account and information while you are out, in the bathroom or on vacation. Anyone can be aware of what your next move may be simply by ‘following’ you on one of these websites.
Now, when does all this become stalking? If you think of it, anyone can find you; get to know you and identity you in under five minutes. If your information gets into the hands of the wrong person, he or she could start following your every move, cough or sneeze. But now with the easiness of digital reproduction, new morals, ethics and etiquette has been created. Now, its common to “creep” peoples on Facebook and not see an issue with it.
And this is when our blurry line appears and our privacies go out the window.
There is a good side to self-surveillance, believe it or not. Individuals like Hasan Elahi became to use it as an alibi. Elahi turned his cell-phone into a tracking device, allowing for anyone to know where he is at any day or time. His reasoning for this was so if the FBI decided to question him again about being a terrorist, he can prove that he is not the one at fault.
Now let’s look into the pros and cons according to Dennis:
Pros - “in the hands of responsible users such watchfulness can be kind, corrective and protective”.
Cons – “in the hands of the immature or manipulative it can turn into harassment, stalking, voyeurism, and intrusion”.
Do you really want to be taking part of this “transparent society”? I do not want to participate in a transparent society but unfortunately my addiction for Facebook is hard to give up…
