Digital art advice - DPI
Hi all!
So I don’t know why I decided to make this post but there it goes! Over the past few weeks I have been helping out few people with their artwork and there is the same misconception about the digital artwork with everyone. That is ~ my DPI is 300 and higher and my artwork is still blurry? Why?
That is because your DPI has nothing to do with pixel quality while viewing it on the screen.
So late’s start off with the basics - what actually is DPI?
DPI - Dots per inch. All this refers to is how many dots your printer will cram into a square inch of paper while printing. So the higher the DPI the higher quality PRINT you will get - therefore unless you are planning on printing your artwork, DPI makes no difference. Computer screens work with pixels. That is what your main focus should be while creating digital artwork that will be for digital viewing only. (Unless you actually do want to print your art work the for all means, 300DPI is the minimum to use :D)
Here is an example:
The first image is 500px by 500px with 300DPI
And here is 500px by 500px with 72dpi:
There is no difference between the two because you computer screen does not pick up the DPI.
So what does matter?
Simple answer is - your pixel resolution matters. That’s because computer displays work on the pixel by pixel basis. When it comes to working on digital artwork I always stick with working no lower than 3000px by 3000px, that’s because that way I am able to zoom in further without losing detail quickly.
Example here.
This is the 500 by 500 pixels image, if I wanted to zoom in and add details I would have to not only zoom in to 800% of my picture but I will also lose a lot of detail while doing so because of how pixelised the image has become.
Here however, is 3000 by 3000px image zoomed in only to 100% the image is still crisp and does not pixelate thus allowing you to work more closely.
Also both of these are 72DPI. :D I think that is all, so in conclusion if you are not planning on printing your art work high DPI does not matter, all it would do is increase your file size and make ni difference to the quality of your artwork!
Hope I have explained this well, if there is any uncertainties or question do not hesitate to drop me a message or just comment :D
