Only show your strongest photos : Quality vs Quantity
I've been watching some videos earlier and Scott Kelby had an interview for his book (that was launched a while back) "The Moment It Clicks". What I got from the interview is only show your strongest photos.
One reason is that if you show 20 "holy shit" shots that would definitely drop your clients, or viewers of your photos to the floor and say that you're a photography god, then a lot of people would look at you and say "you're a great photographer". Nevermind the 200 or 300 other shots that you took that didn't make the cut. Let me clarify, this is not cheating. This is showing your best foot forward.
If you can produce a kick-ass photo set and other people see it, then you'll find a lot of people will either hire you as their photographer or consider you for their next shoot. Again, it's not about quantity, it's about quality.
Try adopting it on your portfolio. If you want a dumping site for the other 500 photos, then facebook would be nice or any other networking site. These sites are there so people can view your bulk work. Would show you are getting a lot of gigs / projects.
Personal portfolio or your professional site would differ. Clients don't want 500 "good" photographs. They'd rather see 20-50 awesome-kick-ass-slap-in-the-face photography god photos. This also reflects on you as a good photo editor. You will have the status of "knowing your photos" and "knowing what a kick-ass" photo is.
Though I'd state here, some photographers only process one photo of a model or a client which get's put on a site.. common man, you snapped 200 photos and you'd only put up one? It's either:
A. You don't like the model.
B. You're lazy at processing.
C. All your shots are "that" bad.
If I shoot 200 photos at my current stage of shooting for a year, I'd get around 20 good photos from it (roughly 10%) (remember I stated good as I'm still in the process of creating that kick-ass photo dunno when I'll get there though but still trying) but as far as I know, they're my strongest photos. Hence they get put up. Don't be a douche and process only one... Your models/clients deserve better.
Showing your strongest photo would look good on your model/client. They'd have 20 kick-ass photos that they could show/use. It would reflect good on the photographer as it shows how awesome you really are. Again, show your strongest photos.
