AMB Interview + Digital Whomp #3
On Saturday, January 26th, the Digital Whomp parties will come again in Paris with a terrific Glitch Hop line up.
As we will have the pleasure to see AMB there, we took the opportunity to ask him a few questions and let you know the man. So here we go:
Hi Ambrus !
Thank you for doing this and let's start with our first question.
In order to tell us a bit about your story, can you tell us how did you discover the Glitch Hop movement and what made you decide to be part of it ?
When I was starting out I was all about ambient and trip hop, loved the works of The Orb, The Irresistible Force, etc. But I felt you could kinda get away with murder sometimes experimenting with ambient textures and downtempo music, if something sounded a little shit, you could just go "yea that's deliberate". I found dance music very challenging though so I produced breakbeat for seven years then house for another three. The first Glitch Hop tracks I heard were probably some of the tunes on Bassnectar's album "Mesmerizing the Ultra", he actually sent some of them over to our label Chi Recordings as demos. I found them super cool but at the time couldn't quite relate to it, it was very new to me.
Only a couple of years later when I went to play San Francisco and Los Angeles did I realise there's a whole genre out there. Many of the guys who are big names now were just starting out back then, I played right after Ooah from the Glitch Mob for instance at Symbiosis Festival. Then I was amazed by the scene but still, didn't jump into it just yet, kept on doing breaks and house for another couple years. When I launched my music production school I took some time off from my music career. A year later I sat down and started to write a tune with no expectations, just play around and see what comes off it. It was something that clearly showed ambient, trip hop and breaks roots but it was slower than your 130BPM breakbeat. Then it just clicked. I'm more of a breaks than a house addict, always felt more at home around the trip hoppy tempo range, and making breakbeat taught me the tricks of dance music too, so it was as if everything was pointing towards Glitch Hop. I started to make my first Glitch Hop tunes in 2011, and in 2012 I had 18 releases.
You run the label called Chi Recordings, what are you aiming with it?
Chi Recordings is actually run by my friend Fine Cut Bodies and me. Our aim has always been simply to put out music that we find interesting. Not necessarily fat and huge tunes but perhaps more on the forward-thinking or innovative side if that makes sense. There's no real genre limitations at Chi, we'll take on glitch hop, experimental, techno, ambient, etc if it moves something in us. We tend to release tunes of up and coming and also more recognised producers, and we always focus on quality rather than quantity so we won't put out something just for the sake of it or just to keep the numbers up.
Which gig was your best one and why ?
I've played many shows in the past 12 years so to be honest I couldn't really pick one, but the best of the recent ones was funny enough probably Fargo, South Dakota, US. I played in a huge barn with lots of crazy people at Halloween, the city was literally snowed under yet Fargo came out in full force. It was an amazing show with an awesome and very very friendly crowd, I really loved it.
What are you expecting for 2013 ? Are there some big things in the pipeline that you want to announce ?
There are lots of things in the pipeline but I wouldn't wanna announce them just yet. Last year things have kicked off, took off more like, and this year is about taking it all to the next level. I'm looking to have another US tour and also my first ever OZ tour that I can't wait for, also doing collaborations with some big names. I don't wanna give away too much yet, but yea, 2013 is certainly gonna be a killer one.
As you will be playing at the Digital Whomp party in Paris, January 26, do you have anything special to tell to the french public ?
Sure I'm already fired up, this is gonna be my first time playing for the French glitch hop heads and I really can't wait. I hope lots of people will make it to the show and I want them to know they're welcome to come up to me and say hi, let's have a drink.
Thanks again Ambrus, see you on Saturday 26th !
Here is a preview of what you can expect from AMB :
[FREE Download]: AMB - 2012 Winter Mix by AMB
As we said, AMB will be playing at Digital Whomp #3 soon, let's see now what you can expect from this huge Bass Music night, in French.

# VENT (Colony productions, Hardcore Beats)

# FLATMATE (Screwloose records, Caliber music)

# PARSIFAL (Prime Dub records)
