I’ve been revisiting some works and using them to explore new takes on old themes. I made a body of work using slip cast modular components designed with CAD software. I was fascinated with the idea of translating things between the physical and the digital world. I explored translating concepts and ideas originating in the digital world into physical objects for my thesis work. Now, I’m exploring translating physical things into the digital realm. . When I work natively in the digital space, I struggle with my desire to intuitively use physical techniques to manipulate things. In the physical space, there is so much possible in the nuance of something that is continuous instead of being quantized. When I work natively in the physical world, I struggle with a desire for ever increasing accuracy and precision, instead of having to compensate for the natural “error” in the variable tolerances in the analog world. . My thought was that being able to bounce between the two spaces would let me have the best of both worlds. However, as I push further into being able to translate between digital and analog at will, I find that I have gained a better appreciation for the “flaws” of each medium. . As we expand our digital presence, we seem to be driving more towards hybridized models instead of staying in one or the other. We are seeing the digital world manifesting into the physical with things like AR. We are seeing bringing physical things into the virtual world with VR and “metaverses.” . I wonder what will happen when that line blurs even further. . Video of digitized slip cast ceramic piece using photogrammetry.
