The word 'onyx' comes from the Greek word meaning 'nail of a finger.' Apparently, one day, when Venus was sleeping, Cupid cut her fingernails and left the clippings scattered on the ground. And because no part of a heavenly body can die, the gods turned them into stones... which later became known as onyx. Ew.

The stone tanzanite is actually blue zoisite. It was renamed 'tanzanite' by Tiffany & Co. in 1968. They renamed it because they thought the English pronunciation for 'zoisite' sounded too much like 'suicide.' Seems like a stretch, to me.
