The problem [Arendt] was seeking to solve is how to be "pleased" with human freedom, how to bear "its awesome responsibility", how to avoid fatalism.... The world we presently inhabit offers precious little prospect for genuine action and, therefore, for freedom. And the future, if anything, holds even less promise ... thus there is only the remotest possibility of deriving a sense of meaning from action in the present. (In these circumstances--in a world where the possibility of acting politically is more or less foreclosed--judging almost becomes a kind of vicarious action, a way of recouping our citizenship in default of a genuine public realm.)
