Hi! I saw something about students getting $25 to dine off-campus, is that true? If so, how does that work? Thanks :)
Hello!
We get $25 dining dollars every year to spend in the Campus Center Cafe, not off-campus. The Cafe is not part of our meal plan, so we have to spend our own money on it, but the college gives us a good amount to spend for the year. I personally spend it all on mudslides: a milkshake with crushed oreos, chocolate syrup and whip cream! The dining dollars are automatically put into our OneCard balance in the fall semester, and you can pay with the card in the cafe.
Do good with your Dining Dollars this Thanksgiving. Starting now till Nov. 23rd you can purchase non-perishable food items from our c-stores (Sidestein, 3rd North, Hayden or U-Hall POD) with your Dining Dollars and donate the items in a Two Birds One Stone drop-off box. Donations will go towards feeding hungry New Yorkers this Thanksgiving!
What’s the difference between Dining Dollars and J-Cash?
Dining Dollars are included with every meal plan. They can be used to purchase food at various locations on campus, including the Fresh Food Cafe (FFC, mostly freshmen), Nolan’s (in Charles Commons, mostly sophomores), Charles Street Market (CharMar), Stone Mill Bakery (in CharMar), Levering Market, Bamboo Cafe, and Chesapeake Roasting Company (in Levering Hall). Unused Dining Dollars roll over from fall to spring semester but expire at the end of the academic year. Dining Dollars are slightly more expensive than a regular dollar, but this is to cover University expenses for dining options. There is also no tax added to food purchased using Dining Dollars.
J-Cash is a prepaid amount of cash available on your J-Card, similar to a debit account. J-Cash can be used to purchase food in all dining facilities, as well as some locations off-campus (look for the J-Card picture in store windows). J-Cash is also accepted at the Daily Grind (Brody Cafe) and Alkemia Cafe (Gilman Hall). Besides dining facilities, J-Cash is also used to do laundry in all residence halls, print in the library, and purchase textbooks from the University bookstore. J-Cash can be added online or at specified stations in the library or in dorms.
Dining got a bit of a makeover and it's helping ease the grief of losing Hayden cookies this academic year (secret: we've found them at Tap Room!). Besides the spankin' new website, NYU Dining has some seriously cool additions that'll get you psyched to start using your meal plan, Dining Dollars, and Campus Cash!
Peet's Coffee & Tea is now located on Kimmel's second floor next to the Commuter Lounge and filled with delicious beverages and pastries to hold you over in between classes. We're wondering how the wait competes with Starbucks' infamous line a block away...
Sidestein Market — yes, another "stein"! — is visible from the Weinstein windows and brings the dining options in the freshmen residence hall up to four. Best part? It's open until 11PM every day! Take that, Fridays at Upstein.
Torch Club's Tap Room is now accepting meal plans for a buffet lunch to accommodate for Hayden Dining Hall's closing, meaning that you can redeem your meals and eat in a fancy restaurant! And believe us, it's pretty freakin' fancy.
NYU dining halls in Washington Square and Brooklyn are now redeeming meal plans. So next time you're traveling between campuses, you don't have to keep going to Chipotle. Well, unless you really want to.
Palladium is now open for breakfast on weekdays — score! So next time you need to munch after a morning workout, you won't have to go very far.
New Campus Cash merchant locations keep joining the list, so if you're looking for something beyond the dining halls, use your Campus Cash at yummy eateries nearby like Chipotle, Campus Eatery, and Umami Burger. Gotta take advantage of being in NYC one way or another!
NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi (pictured respectively) opened their full campuses this Fall — cafeterias included! Your NYU New York meal plan won't work overseas, though...
So maybe you can help me. Can you explain dining dollars to me a little bit more? I don't have a forreal meal plan because Im not in the dorms but i have the required 325 dining dollars. Can I just walk up into these places with the food and eat there? I don't get it. Like I know some dorms and stuff have their own dining hall things, but am I allowed to eat there too?
I think what this page says is that you can use dining dollars at any dining location on campus (including dining halls like Lakeside or Fresh Foods as well as retail locations like Starbucks or Subway), plus Domino's, Buffalo Phil's, and the recreation center's Smoothie King. You can also spend dining dollars at the vending machines. Burke Residence Hall has a dining area on the first floor, and you can use dining dollars to eat there too. :)
Okay I am so lost when it comes to campus cash and dining dollars. Could you maybe explain what each one is and how to get started/set up each one. Thank you so much!!
Both of these work a lot like debit cards, but you use your NYU ID for them.
Dining Dollars are used at dining locations, like dining halls, Starbucks on the square, Dunkin' Donuts, Peet's Coffee, and Argo Tea. More information on them can be found here.
¢ampu$ ¢a$h can be used at many locations throughout the city, many of them having a picture of our beautiful Joan Torch displayed somewhere. There's more information here about signing up, reloading your card, etc.
