Every artistic rendition of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs shows it striking the daytime side of the planet. It’s never depicted hitting at night, which I think about look much cooler because suddenly the molten earth and burning atmosphere would illuminate the entire dark half of the planet from above! Imagine being a dinosaur in Brazil or Canada, a thousand miles from the impact site, and the sky is suddenly filled with fire before it rains down on you. They wouldn’t even realize what happened, they wouldn’t have had the capacity to understand, they were just animals, they didn’t know there were such things as asteroids or even such a thing as space itself! One moment everything is okay, the next moment everything is dead. Of course it wouldn’t REALLY be instantaneous like that though, the extinction event lasted YEARS, and that makes me wonder, what was the very last dinosaur? Like, which species managed to stave off extinction the longest? What sort of life would that have been, being born into a world where every other species is dead, where there’s no more food? And what was life like for the species that actually survived it?!? Like, a majority of species died, but some lived and life bounced back as diverse as ever. We’re only here because some little rat-thing managed to survive in its burrows and went on to reclaim the dying planet in the name of the mammals.
