What is YOUR favorite dinosaur 🦖 👊👊👊

Ok so this is actually a really difficult question because I have a very deep love for a lot of prehistoric life for a wide variety of reasons. But I think the dinosaurs im most attached to are a lot of the weird, fucked up, strange herbivores:

The variety of triceratops & the various close species that fill the same shape & niche are a big point of interest- as well as stuff like Ankylosaur & the Pachycephalosaurus. Im so interested in these because so many of them just like- didn’t become anything. Like there is no modern triceratops long distantly evolved relative- triceratops & so many other absolutely stellar creatures are especially interesting to me because they are entirely alien to all we currently have on the planet. But some how, through insane luck & circumstance; we get to see these alien bones & learn about them & I think thats so fucking cool

Oh but also I’ve been obsessed with Parasaur & Spinosaur since I was tiny so probably those above all else.

Niche-r dino I love a lot is Psittacosaurs. No one talks abt it except dino & fossil nerds & a really astounding Psittacosaurs fossil went viral a few years back but outside of that no one really cares in the general public ✊😞🦖

First in literal ever and im posting this💀

I apologize in advance of witnessing my maddening Hyperfixation on animals that are now displayed in museums.(idk if it is maddening lol)

I just watched 65, a sifi movie about dinosaurs and it fr was our planet and i live for it! I was so happy and excited to see it when it came out in theaters. Sadly i didn't get to see it till now. The movie came out a few months ago. Besides that, i have a few iffys about the movie. The dinosaurs are attacking the main two characters. Usually thats reasonable cause dinosaurs, but only applied to the carnivores and not the herbavors. And i know its a movie but i cant help but think logically with it. Like the attacking dinosaurs stull when they wouldn't. There where these long limbed ones that seemed so out of place. I know im not fully knowledgeable with the topic i loved for so many years.

And another thing that would bring up roar among other dinosaur enthusiasts and professionals. I personally think its impossible for a asteroid to kill every creature on the planet. Maybe if it was multiple massive asteroids but a lot of people think it was one. With hiw big earth is, its not possible. At least alone. Years ago i believed the elements of all killed the dinosaurs. Where the asteroid still may have stuck the earth but there were also the volcanoes and other natural disasters.

Oooh but now i think there was no asteroid at all! There isn't exactly proof of a big boy rock hitting the planet. There probably is but im a tad lazy to go looking for it and i just wanna go on my mad rant.

Im sad the movie didn't add the acute tranasures rex(100% spelled that wrong) you dont understand how traumatizing it is to see a life size acute t-rex. ***it has lips and stares into your soul with its beady eyes and can paralyze you by its "roar". The roar we all know isn't how it actually sounds. Its a rumble. And it can easily knows where you are bc it has really good eyesight and smell.***

The raptors are fine. Size of turkeys.

This still bothers me this exists lol, like, I feel I’m one of the more lenient paleo nerds who doesn’t mind inaccuracy at all as long as it’s not in a documentary, monsterfied (in terms of behavior, and I mean to the extreme), or people treat it as fact and have the gual to call scientists’ VERY accurate reconstructions wrong.

I’m sorry about this rant but this kind of thing REALLY R E A L L Y irks me and I’m a VERY lenient person when it comes to dinos-

Way to go twitter for TRYING to make accurate reconstructions of prehistoric ANIMALS (let alone ANY kind of dinosaur, monsterfied or not) political (and gosh, can I just say I’m so tired of the word “woke”!? It’s completely lost its meaning at this point and so many people use it just to justify them not liking something even if said thing is actually GOOD, and if anyone accuses me of things for saying it that, I’m a-political and unbiased and hate how toxic politics are with a burning passion) these guys are so terminally online smh HHHHHH

And it’s not even funny-bad, at least that one dude at my church who keeps trying to argue with me saying dinosaurs never existed and all the bones we found were “goat bones” was freaking HILARIOUS (I’m not joking btw, that actually happened…. multiple times LOL…). This… This is just infuriatingly sad HHHH

Which Is Cooler: Feathered Raptors Or Scaled Raptors?

Answer? Neither. Saying one is “cooler” than the other is not accurate. Aesthetically both have their own appeal. Feathered raptors have the appeal for essentially being odd birds while scaled raptors appeal to reptilian aesthetics. Both are good for different reasons.

Feathered raptors ARE more accurate, however, and media does need to update the portrayal of dinosaurs. However, this doesn’t need to come at the cost of insulting reptilian aesthetics. There were reptilian prehistoric creatures, so why can’t we embrace them while at the same time updating dinosaurs. A feathered Coelophysis competing with a scaled and armored Postosuchus. Just picture it.

Dinosaurs: Scales vs Feathers

I like the aesthetics of scaled dinosaurs a lot. I like reptiles and I like dragons, so scaled dinosaurs are nice to look at. I think the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park are cool to look at, and it would be awesome if they actually looked like that. But they don’t, so I’ve accepted that many dinosaur designs I grew up with are as fictional as dragons. Doesn’t mean I don’t still like to look at them.

But many dinosaur did have feathers, and I do think that pop culture should move more towards feathered dinosaurs and away from scaled dinosaurs. Will it be sad to see the scaled dinos go? Yes, but dinosaur media can’t be decades behind progress forever. It needs to catch up eventually.

And while I am a fan of scaled dinosaurs, I’m less a fan of people grasping at straws to try and justify their favorite dinosaurs having scales, especially when it comes to the raptors. Deinonychus has no evidence for feathers itself, but since it is in the group (arguably) closest to birds and its relatives have evidence of feathers and wings, it’s safe to assume that feathers, not scales, were the default raptor covering. You wouldn’t discover an extinct bird and say it’s covered in scales, so don’t do it with raptors. You’re allowed to like scales dinosaurs, but you need to admit that these are fictional depictions.

Additionally, I like experimental feathering/crests when designing dinosaurs, because birds can be incredibly flamboyant, and there was a good chance that at least some dinosaurs were as well. But at the same time, a lot of them probably aren’t accurate. Large carnivores and herbivores were probably unfortunately dull. Maybe some splashes of color here or there, but not bright blue. Smaller dinos though? Who knows. Sexual Selection probably made at least one oddball.

Jurassic World: Feathered Dinosaurs

I’ve been seeing a lot of manipulations of JW raptors with feathers. And while feathered dinosaurs are nice, I haven’t seen any feathered properly.

Raptors were about as close to birds as non-avian dinosaurs got. A lot of people draw them with feathered hands, but this isn’t accurate. They more likely had wings with claws. The hands of the raptors in JW are not accurate, and just shoving feathers into them won’t make the raptors accurate. And that’s to say nothing about the size.

Dinosaur Movie Pet Peeve

When T. rex (and by extension other large tyrannosaurs[Tarbosaurus* I'm looking at you.]) bite their opponents on the neck and their opponents don't die. T. rex had an insanely powerful bite force and could break bone. But in movies they sort of just bite things on the neck and move them around a bit, even when they're supposed to be fully intent on killing their opponent. You'd think it'd be easier to just bite and bite down as much as they could. You'd at least pierce their windpipe.

This is especially jarring when it uses the bite-neck-to-kill tactic on other things and it works right away. So a prey item is screwed but the moment it's trying to kill another predator it decides to just wrestle for a bit even though it later kills it a different way.

*Now I don't know Tarbosaurus' bite force, so I don't know how strong it was compared to its cousin. But I'd still think if it's biting a dinosaur on the neck with the intent to kill, it'd end up with a kill.

{Also, for all I love Spinosaurus with all my heart, when it snaps the T-Rex' neck in Jurassic Park III... It really could not have done that, it's jaw was nowhere near powerful enough and it's teeth would have broken no doubt if it had attempted to bite with that much force. It really could not hold struggling prey in its jaws. Could it have killed a T-Rex? Yes. Could a T-Rex have killed it? Yes? But, it really is doubtful a Spinosaurus could snap T-Rex's neck with it's jaw. With a strong enough blow to the right part of its neck with its powerful arms maybe. (I'm aware it uses its arms as well in the movie, but it held T-Rex in its jaws... Which have been much, much, much harder for it in reality.)

T-Rex could have broken the Spinosaurus' neck with its jaw though; smaller or not it undoubtedly had the more powerful bite. Tyrannosaurs heads were massive and their jaws were immensely powerful.  Their teeth were decided to crunch through flesh and bone. 

I love Jurassic Park to pieces, don't get me wrong. But this is the series that made Velociraptor over six foot tall. xD
