"The Dry Highlands" The younger grey carno had been living on the edge of starvation for days. Desperate, he was forced to wander far beyond his own territory — and that’s when he stumbled across another carno. This one was much larger, its body streaked with red like a warning painted across its skin: danger. The larger carno still hadn’t noticed him, and with hunger gnawing at him stronger than fear, there was only one choice left to make.

Day 250#: Rose-Crowned Fruit Dove

Today's animal of the day is the Rose-Crowned Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus regina)!

Also known as Swainson's or the pink-capped fruit dove, this species of dove is native to the tropical rainforests of southern Indonesia as well as northern and eastern Australia. These colorful birds have whitish-gray heads and necks with a bright pink patch of feathers on the tops of their heads that are bordered by a ring of yellow, hence their name. Their wings are green while their underbellies are yellowish-orange with another pink patch of feathers in the center.

Unlike the Wompoo fruit dove, which I covered on day 210#, the rose-crowned fruit dove is a member of the genus Ptilinopus, which contains all of the "true" fruit doves. Like its close relatives, this species' diet consists mostly of fruit (what a surprise), such as those from various types of palms and vining plants. The species was first described by English naturalist William Swainson, which is where the bird's alternative common name comes from. However, Swainson originally believed this species to be just a color variant of the gray-green fruit dove, which is native to the Society Islands of French Polynesia.
