What does this even mean I’m legitimately confused
social roles are assigned to people based on classes. people exist within multiple social roles simultaneously--child, sibling, parent, student, teacher, police officer, firefighter, president, etc. social roles are a set of expected behaviors assigned to people based on their classes; e.g. doctors wear lab coats and stethoscopes and pedestrians obey the instructions of crossing guards, etc. people inhabit multiple classes simultaneously and therefore operate under multiple roles simultaneously
there is a set of social expectations--ways to speak, act, dress, and interact with others--that is assigned on the basis of your sex class. these expectations are called “sex roles”, and were later termed “gender”. The idea that people have an innate immutable sense of self that is “gender” and that social roles are a separate thing called “gender roles” is a relatively new development, and one that i think is born from the proliferation of misunderstood ideas. the innate immutable sense of self is your personality, and it is in no way shape or form related to your sex or the expectations society has of you because of it
