when i die, i know my words will be my everything.
Enough people wished me luck prior to the weekend, but unfortunately it didn’t work out, not even for one stage. Before I begin I have to apologise for the lack of photos as well. Unfortunately our team photographer was unable to make it along, which I was gutted about because she makes killer pancakes! So with the block of four photos at the bottom, it’s a game of ‘Where’s Wally?’. Click on them to enlarge them and see if you can find me, answers are at the bottom of this blog.
Let’s start from the beginning.
Was it an important race? Yes
Did the courses suit me? Kind of
What position was I expecting to finish? Top 20
What position did I finish? 89th
See the issue? it was a tour of three stages classified as quite a hilly tour, but the hilliest stage only had 1300 metres of climbing in it over 113km, so not too hilly. The first stage was going swell, got in a break that didn’t stick, avoiding the crashes, staying comfortable in the bunch of 185 and helping keep the teammates near the front. Lovely. Then, with 1.5km to go, while I was prepping for the sprint, I got a flat tyre. Lovely. As it was within the last 3km I got the same time as the front bunch, so I was sitting one hundred and twenty something on GC. The team time trial the following morning went just as well, my 2IC Cory had to change his wheel before the start due to the officials not allowing locked out gearing, but instead having to use a wheel with way smaller gears and consequently viewing the back of the team car as we took off due to being unable to spin his legs fast enough to keep up. So that all kinda went down the drain as well... The third stage Sunday afternoon was another road race and things were really going great. Early on a break went and at the 12km mark I made chase, spending 5km with two others bridging across to it. All was going well in the break, the gap got to one minute, I was picking up KOM points and I was already contemplating where I was going to attack them for the win. Once again, this all went down the drain when the break got caught, I resumed my position fighting within the bunch for the eventual sprint. This was going okay, not great but certainly could’ve been a lot worse, until 5km from the finish line where I was caught in a crash. I was right on the edge of it and the falling riders forced me into the bank and out of contention for a decent finish. I managed to haul ass and get in touch with the extremely strung out bunch after a crash had taken down another 10 riders and was awarded a finishing time only a couple of seconds down on the winner. So, that’s the story of how I became the prince of a town called despair. All jokes aside though, the team was great all weekend, the team director, masseuse, parents and Jozef, our Belgian ‘dad’ all looked after us amazingly. In regards the modified version of Where’s Wally, results are here. On to the next one T.W.C
