"Murph."
Cooper took a big breath, the air escaping through his nose all at once — it was strange, having memories of his daughter that seemed so close to the surface, but they were decades ago. He let his head hang, propping himself up with his forearms against his legs.
"M’daughter… I missed most of her life. I can’t take it back."
Oh – well, at least something relatable.
Though usually people were away from their daughters for less admirable than to hide immorality.
But if there was one positive to living so long, it was understanding so much. Not about life – God, that never got easier – but about people.
Now, when her eyes turned towards the stranger, there were touches of sympathy within them. “What happened?”
