oh, the places you’ll go: northwest edition
a lovely reader emailed me asking which places in my books you can visit in real life, one of my favorite questions ever, as it turns out. M, here you go:
All Our Pretty Songs
Raoul and the narrator work at the Pike Place Market (the bead store’s gone, the Egyptian store was still there last time I was). The witch store is Tenzing Momo. The narrator eats at Sully’s Burgers in Forks on the way back from hiking on the Peninsula (Hoh river, mostly). Jack and Aurora and the narrator hold hands in Gasworks Park after Aurora’s party. Jack kisses the narrator at Second Beach. Aurora and the narrator eat dumplings and noodles at Moonlight Café and get into trouble at the OK Hotel (RIP, but there’s a lot of live show footage online), RKCNDY (RIP), and the Crocodile (RIP). They bum cigarettes off bohemians at Bauhaus (RIP). The narrator and Aurora and Jack get pho at Than Brothers on Capitol Hill. The canal’s in Ballard and farmer’s market is on Sundays.
Dirty Wings
Cass spanges on University Ave and works at Tenzing Momo. Everybody goes hiking on the Peninsula. Judy works at Red Light Vintage. Maia and her parents have their awkward farewell dinner at Anthony’s. Jason records his album at Reciprocal.
About A Girl
Jack lives in Port Townsend, off Cook Ave. Kate owns Sirens (there’s actually more than one bar). Tally’s bookstore friend is Chris’s dad and his bookstore really is called Melville & Co. (RIP). The clandestine production of Marat/Sade was orchestrated by Simon and Jeremiah, with assistance from myself, in the closed-down officers’ hall at Fort Worden. I played Charlotte. Maddy’s cabin is off Discovery; for all I know it’s still there, and the coyotes are still in the ravine. I’m not going to tell you where Maddy and Tally get their oysters. The Canoe Journey is every summer and the farmer’s market is on Saturdays. And Tally leaves for hell from Chetzemoka Park. My friend Ruby takes really amazing pictures.
Her freedom is your will. The way you knock down the walls make confetti of the bricks. The way you would have set fire to her piano right there in the living room if you thought it could have smoked her out of this pristine prison sooner.
Your freedom is in her body. In the short, soft hairs on her smooth brown upper thighs. In the careless way your fingers tangle together in the sand.
When she cuts her palm you put it to your lips, healing it the only way you know how, letting the salt dry there saving it for later.
When you cut yourself on her her lips are also coated in salt, desire that tastes so sharp it stings, and you don’t know if it’s yours or his.
In your dreams everything is sweet like it should have been, you cup her breasts in the palms of your hands as a figure made of negative space, wearing death’s face gently thanks you for bringing her to him.
As she touches your neck with feather light fingertips he tells you that all love is a betrayal, that you should not feel bad that things happened this way.
Her freedom was in your care, but now it’s been selfishly squandered on the false promise of forever. How does it feel, Cassandra the Knower of things, the girl with the love that no one believes, how does it feel to have known all along that she would leave because she fashioned herself after you?
Coda to Dirty Wings | L.E.
Do you love him?” Maia is quiet for a while. “ I don’t know. I think so. I think I could. Oscar told me so many times I don’t know anything about love that I started to wonder if maybe I would never feel anything at all. I felt like that all the time until…” She trails off. “Until what?” Cass prompts. “Until I met you,” Maia says quietly, not looking at her. “Everything changed when I met you.

Love is always selfish,” Oscar snaps. “Always. Love is only interested in taking away all that makes a person what they are, and bringing this person into you. There is no love that does not wish to take and take until there is nothing left of the beloved.

Here’s Maia at last, walking toward the car with a brown paper bag. Long legs in ragged shorts. Maia’s body was Cass’s own discovery; she’d suspected that under the pressed khakis and sweater sets lurked an angel waiting to be unearthed, and she’d been right, though it took her a while to prevail. Maia, like a princess imprisoned in a tower, just waiting for someone to come tell her to let her hair down. Cass has stolen plenty in her short life, but Maia is by far the greatest heist she’s ever pulled.
