Is Wi-Fi in the form of dirty electricity in your home causing health problems? In this study a group of high school students explored this question using plant germination.
Phantom Ringing Syndrome
False sensations of a buzzing phone, which releases pleasure and, more often, anxiety inducing neurotransmitters.
*Future technological advancements such as Google Glass, which will eventually notify the user visually, may prime us to see things that aren’t actually there.
Nomophobia
Technology based FOMO (fear of missing out) aka anxiety caused by not having access to your devices (no-mobile phobia).
*Phone addiction can have a very negative impact on people’s lives. For some, there is a very neural pathway between feeling of techno deprivation & a full on panic attack.
Cybersickness
Nausea induced sensations felt while interacting with certain digital environments. (brain tricked into motion sickness).
*See Apple IOS 7 update in 2013 and their utilization of the parallax effect (which makes icons appear to be moving in a three dimensional space), the sensations this update gave was compared to motion sickness experienced while reading in a car.
Facebook Depression
Depression caused by social interactions, or lack thereof, on Facebook.
*A University of Michigan study shows depression among young people directly corresponds to their relationship with Facebook.
1.) Realize that no one is perfect, social media highlights the good and seldom the bad.
2.) Have other means of communicating, call your mom, have an IRL conversation with another human.
Problematic Internet Use
Constant and unhealthy urge to access the internet
*Often referred to as internet addiction disorder… internet usage that interferes with daily life. Compulsive internet use is usually a symptom of a larger issue (depression, OCD, ADD, social anxiety) rather than a unique disorder itself.
Cyberchondria
Hypochondria with a broadband connection
*The tendency to believe you have a disease you read about online… Headache? No worries, it’s probably nothing… But WEBMD says headaches are a symptom of brain tumors. You’re probably going to die soon.
Google Effect
Tendency of the mind to retain less information because everything you need or want to know is only clicks away.
*Not necessarily bad… could be a mark of societal evolution of a smarter, more informed populace. Dr. Rosen
