"you shouldn't have done that."
Bioshock AU
“What the hell was I supposed to do?!” she shrieked, her breathing erratic and uneven as she glanced down upon the little girl sprawled across the floor.
Tears stained her face, leaving traces through the blood and dirt that was stained there prior to them. She was alive, although her breathing was too slow to be comfortable. Although, from what she’d seen of them, and from what Jiyong had told her, that little girl was no longer human. She was a product of the drug in this place, something that they needed to survive, and something she could and would never understand. At one point in time these were called little sisters; Kiko pitied the day they turned into a bank of drugs for the addicts that roam this dark and evil place.
“She was screaming! She screamed!” Her eyes were wide and panicked; she backed up against the wall as the large steps of what was coming made its way toward the both of them at a terrifying speed. The room they were in only shook more and more as the new threat approached them, and she could already imagine those red eyes and spiraling drill ready to make a clean hole through her waist. The tears clouded her vision as she looked desperately to the other male for help, as if he could. No, she fucked up for the both of them. They were now at the mercy of their own means of escape. She looked around the room, which was illuminated by the light from the signs that were still active outside, a giant glass being the only thing that protected them from the suffocating ocean waters, but their only exit was a vent up high above them, or the door they came through.
That didn’t seem like the ideal route, especially with the threat barreling right through the door.
It was a giant – she’d seen one before, and she’d seen one angry. As if the darkness could be her shield, she pressed herself hard enough to feel the indentations being made against her back. Jiyong was silent as well, and she couldn’t feel him there anymore. Her entire body stiff with fear, she managed to turn her head to where she knew her companion to be, only to see he was gone. He… left.
She wanted to scream, she wanted to cry, but her instincts prevented her from loosening herself up from the wall for any reason. Her eyes gazed over the red light that signaled her ultimate demise if she got in its sights, and more tears fell down her cheeks as the giant man approached the unconscious little sister. A big daddy – one that was looking for his next victim; her.
It groaned solemnly, its drill slowing down as it decided there was nothing else in the room anymore, and the child was still alive. Kiko made a path in her mind to her exit, already adapting to the idea that she was now on her own. If she could run fast enough and crouch herself into some small space, she might be able to get away and live. But that wasn’t a bet she was all that willing to make, considering it felt like everyone was her enemy. Anyone they encountered didn’t care about life; they wanted adam, they wanted eve. They didn’t want to make friends, they didn’t want to escape. There was no talking to them. She couldn’t survive that run, and she couldn’t survive alone.
And that was when she felt a pebble hit her rather hard on the top of her head. She flinched, looking up quickly to its source, which to her ultimate surprise (and relief), was from across the room. Jiyong was clutching onto the vent, loosely as it seemed. Kiko’s eyes were wide as she saw his figure again, his legs wrapped around a pipe in the ceiling to hold him there. His weapon motioned toward the vent, and the curved blade slowly pried the contraption open. The big daddy looked behind him with a roar, but turned to tending to the little sister as the room fell silent again.
Jiyong motioned to the vent again, and Kiko started to understand. He wanted her to run for it. Run for her life, climb up from the equipment or boxes, and escape through the vent. That was… fucking insane. She wouldn’t have time to run across the room. Kiko shook her head desperately, mouthing the words “No” and “Please” over and over, the tears streaming faster as he lifted the vent open just a bit closer to its breaking point. That was a sound that could not be excused by the big daddy. That sound would blow their cover for good, and send the whole room into a frenzy that she had no confidence in surviving.
A smirk pulled across his lips, as his free hand lifted to pull his mask down upon his face again. She was still silently begging him to leave the vent alone, but a part of her knew that there was no amount of pleading that would save her from Jiyong or the big daddy.
The vent was ripped open and launched like a bullet toward the giant man, earning a loud hiss and the even louder sound of the drill roaring back to life as the big daddy became on high alert. Kiko pushed herself off the wall and sprinted to the other side as Jiyong jumped away from the vent, moving himself across the room like a very talented acrobat. She was scared, but she refused to look back as she hauled herself up onto the first set of contraptions. There was a lot of gunfire and a lot of explosions as some kind of confrontation happened behind her. Kiko climbed with all her might, pulling her own weight with strength she didn’t know she had.
When she reached the vent, she looked back to see Jiyong still providing an ever so needed and well-planned distraction. Kiko called for him, her voice scratchy by the sudden attempt to be louder than all the gunfire. She fell deeper into the vent, and felt herself falling backwards. She tumbled down the vent, earing plenty of new scratches and bruises on the way down, landing herself in a dark but vacant room. She patted her pockets for a lighter, which she found and lit as fast as she could manage to see what she was looking at.
Another, much neater tumble was heard behind her as she surveyed the rest of the room, to which she turned and saw Jiyong again, who wore a very mischievous and uncomfortable smile – as if he just enjoyed their near death experience.
“We made it…” she whispered, glancing away from him and hugging herself with her free hand to try and stop her entire body from shaking.
