Assignment 8.1 Erin Grogan
"In short, the structure of the curriculum, or rather the very fact that it has a structure, works against its supposed end, and therefore something must be built into that structure to counter the tendency to produce nonresponsive spheres of self-contained complacency."
- Fish, "Being Interdisciplinary Is So Very Hard to Do," page 102.
Before this quote the author spent time discussing what disciplinary study is supposed to offer to the world, and what it is actually doing. This quote here determines that the way this system runs is inherently against what the goal of disciplinary study is. It also serves as a segue into discussing how interdisciplinary study is actually pushing the boundaries of the system in place and performing the goal of a full and wide education.
