OK, I think I get it. The detective and the victim whose murder he's investigating are, in the end, the same. And the victim and the killer who did him in are the same. You go fight in a war, you'll regret it. You don't fight, you'll also regret it. Choose your side, you'll never be happy. No one wants to be themselves. But what else is there to be. Just people, figuring out life, doing their best to exist in a world that is failing them all, on the brink of destruction.

But miracles do exist— even at its worst, there's joy in the world, there's fun to be had in living. Or you can be a bitter old man who hates everything, and you'll never be able to see it.
