NEW VIDEO! Discord kind of sucks now. What now?
If you've been using Discord for long enough, you probably feel the same way. The site was an actual blessing in 2018, when communities realised they could build themselves on the site, and when people realised you could DM, call and chat on servers at the same time.
Now, it feels like a bloated mess. Every single time I boot the app, there's some Nitro ad trying to get me to buy into their service. There's a cosmetic store, for some reason; despite a lot of the "gamers" Discord sells itself to hating the concept. There's increasing helicopter parenting on the site, with age verification laws (that I mention in the video) restricting some of the site.
Where there isn't restriction, you have 8,000 Discord accounts being banned for CSAM just because they posted an image of a grid. Where there are restrictions, you have Discord losing 70,000 government ID's to a hack of their third party support line.
Safe to say, Discord sucks. Who else has the same features as Discord, though? Basically all the competitors, which I checked out in this video.
Discord has got some real competition. There's one that actually looks after its users, one that doesn't spy on them, and one with a cool self-hosting feature that I could see a lot of larger servers getting behind.
Then, there's some competitors I don't think will amount to much.
I go through a lot of them in this video. There's a few I had to disqualify for a number of reasons: couldn't safely use it, looked like it wouldn't replace Discord. That sort of thing.
