Treat anything on Discord as media that will be lost
Do not use Discord to host your files. Do not rely on Discord to preserve your text. DO NOT RELY ON DISCORD FOR ANY KIND OF PRESERVATION OR HOSTING!!
It CAN be lost, it WILL be lost! You must consider Discord as a part of the Core Internet, controlled by one company that hosts the servers.
I thought it was impressive at first that it replaced IRC, but now I am horrified. If the company behind Discord went under today, how many friends would you lose?
How many relationships? How much writing?
You may think this won't happen, but I remember when AIM went down and along with it, entire novels worth of interaction with my oldest friend.

Back up your files! Download anything you've saved to Discord NOW, before the API changes go into effect! And DO NOT RELY ON THEM FOR HOLDING IMPORTANT FILES!
Reminder folks, discord still has it's global age verification plans happening this year in the start of June
Best we start cancelling nitro's subscription, send feedback, or make fire on other platforms, and still give fire to your local/state/federal representatives about these age verification laws they brought into the world wide web.

Discord is still going to go through with age verification. To help prevent this, you should not buy decorations, not watch ads, not buy nitro, and continue to bother/spam them.
If you think it won't affect you, it will. They will use ai to determine if a server needs to be age restricted, potentially locking people out of servers whether there was actual NSFW in it or not... (normal images have been getting marked as inappropriate for years), and considering the way their moderation already isn't very good, accounts could be banned for determining other accounts are minors even if they're not.
Just spent 15 minutes of my life calmly and factually lambasting Discord for even considering adding extremely invasive and potentially dangerous AI features to their app (the kind that record your call activity and gather your data, as well as add AI moderation to shit an AI shouldn't even be touching since it's an unreliable technology with no real ethical or moral backbone of its own).
Anyway, I'd highly encourage people to take the survey.
We do not need this crap interfering with an app that's meant to promote genuine connection with people and communities.
Shapes Inc., an AI/LLM company, just got banned from Discord for trying to secretly use Discord user & message data to train it's AIs via use of their Shapes Bots!
I see this as an absolute win!
Fuck LLMs/GenAIs. :)
