Headcanon: Kelpiens are deeply communal and are born with an unusually strong desire to engage in physical contact with their peers and family members. The Kelpien equivalent to oxytocin plays a major role in Kelpien biology.
Saru has a tactile massage therapy regimen that was developed specifically for him by Shenzhou's CMO. On the Shenzhou as well as on Discovery, he comes into sick bay twice a week to have his therapy administered.
