Coastal wonderland Quadra & Cortez Island

On the way to Nanaimo and Campbell river

Quadra Island

Quadra Island is a 35 km long and 15 km wide Island on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island and part of the discovery Islands. She was named after Spanish navigator Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra in the 18th century.

How to get there: By car the only way from Vancouver is to take a ferry from Horshoe Bay to Nanaimo (approx 1.5 hours), then you need to drive 150 km north to Campell river and take another ferry to Quathiaski Cove on Quadra Islands (approx 20 min). You also can get there by float plane who ever is short on time and has a big wallet.

Things to see: The most popular spot is the Rebecca Spit Provincial Park, a little Peninsula near Heriot Bay. If the weather is nice you will have an absolute stunning view of the mountains on the mainland of Canada. The Surge narrows where you have the chance to see some tidal rapids, you get there from the north end of the island via a 3 hour (round trip) hike through the pristine coastal rainforest. Other sights are the lighthouse on the south-west side or you go for a hike to one of many bays like Open and Village bay where you get the chance to collect some delicious Oysters for dinner.

I would highly recommend to bring a canoe or kayak to explore the bays and the shoreline of the island. That way you have probably a 99 % chance to encounter Harbour porpoise, (which look similar to Dolphins, but they are there own family) and also seals.

Other activities: Mushroom pickers will have their fun in pristine forest, I visited in the winter month and still found yellow feet, artist conks, Turkey tails and Redbelt Polypores, but I'm sure in the fall you will find way more species like King Boletis, Chantrelles, Hedgehogs and many other kinds.

Fishing is probably the best in the salmon and halibut season out in the ocean, but there are also coastal cutthroat trouts in the Main lake in the north of Quadra Island.

If you travel the west coast of Canada and plan to see some of the islands give Quadra definitely a shot, you will love it.

Quadra Island Quadra Island ist eine Insel an der Ostküste Vancouver Islands und hat eine Länge von 35 Kilometern und eine breite von 15 Kilometern mit rund 2000 Einwohnern. Sie ist außerdem Teil der Discovery Islands und benannt nach dem Spanischen Navigator Juan de la Bodega y Quadra im 18th Jahrhundert.

Der Weg: Der einzige Weg mit dem Auto von Vancouver ist mit der Fähre von Horshoe Bay nach Nanaimo (Vancouver Island) was rund 1.5 Stunden dauert. Von dort aus müsst Ihr 150 Kilometer Richtung Norden nach Campell river fahren und von dort die nächste Fähre nach Quathiaski Cove (Quadra Island) nehmen welche nur 20 Minuten dauert.

Was gibt es zu sehen: Der wohl bekannteste Platz ist der Rebecca Spit Provinzial Park, eine kleine Halbinsel in der Nähe von Heriot Bay. Wenn das Wetter gut und die Sicht klar ist hat man hier einen genialen Ausblick auf die Berge des Festlandes. Die Surge narrows wo man die Gelegenheit hat Gezeiten Strömungen zu sehen, man kann diese Stelle auf einer 3 Stündigen Wanderung (hin und zurück) entlang der Küste und durch den Regenwald erreichen. Andere Sehenswürdigkeiten sind der Leuchtturm im Süd-westen der Insel oder man geht auf eine kleine Wanderung zu den abgelegen Buchten wie die Open und Village Bucht. Dort hat man auch sehr gute Chancen Austern und Muscheln zum Abendessen zu sammeln.

Ich würde jeden empfehlen ein Kanu oder Kajak mit zunehmen oder sich eins auszuleihen. Mit diesem könnt ihr die Küstenregionen erkunden und habt wahrscheinlich eine 99 Prozentige Möglichkeit Delphine und Seehunde zu sehen.

Andere Aktivitäten: Pilzsammler kommen hier auf jedenfall auf ihre Kosten, ich besuchte die Insel im Winter und die Pilzsaison war eigentlich vorbei jedoch konnte ich trotz alledem einige Arten wie Vitalpilze, Leistlinge und Stoppelpilze finden. Ich bin mir jedoch sicher das man hier im Herbst viele andere Pilze wie Steinpilze oder Pfifferlinge finden kann.

Angeln ist am besten in der Lachssaison von Mitte August bis ende Oktober, sowohl soll auch das Heilbutt angeln hier hervorragend sein. Falls ihr außerhalb dieser Saison die Insel besucht habt ihr eine gute Chance auf Cutthroat Forellen im Main lake oder in den Nebenflüssen zu angeln.

Falls ihr interessiert seit einige Inseln an der Westküste zu erkunden ist Quadra Island auf jedenfall einen besuch wert. Ihr werdet es lieben !

Cortes ist eine weitere kleine Insel rund 50 Minuten bei Fähre westlich von Quadra und sogar noch viel ruhiger. Sie wurde im Jahre 1792 auf einer Expedition von Galiano und Valdez nach Hernan Cortes, ein spanischer Eroberer aus Mexiko benannt. Die gesamte Insel ist Teil traditioneller Regionen der Wei-We-Kai, Kwiakah, Homalco und Klahoose first Nation und hat eine Bevölkerung von 1000 Menschen.

Die wohl besten Orte zu besuchen währen Hanks Beach, Whaletown, Squirrel Cove und Manson landing. Außerdem beachtet vielleicht euer Essen und trinken mitzubringen da sich nach meiner Sicht nur ein kleines Geschäft auf der Insel befindet.

Falls ihr also Quadra Island besuchen solltet plant auf jeden fall auch einen Tagesausflug nach Cortes ein.
