“haven’t seen you before—” alex was actually expecting another visitor but hasn’t cleared the mud out of his eyes to see who it really was. what an awkward encounter on his part, but besides that the man to seem to steam off a mysterious, prowling tone to alex— in that case alex toned himself down until he could finish the puzzle of the man he was facing. “have you got a place where you’re from, my brother?” in other words, he was merely asking where the man was from since it was unusual and unlikely to find visitors around this complex.
