Kinch reached out hesitantly for her shoulder. He wasn’t good at this whole physical comfort thing. But he could do his best, especially for someone his colonel loved. “Hey,” he said. “Do you want a hug, or to talk about it? I’m here, okay? We’re going to get through this, no matter what.”
Leaning into his touch, trying to suppress her tears, she nodded slowly, chin trembling. Normally, she could just breeze through things, crying if needed but only when alone. But today wasn’t one of those days... her experiences weighed too heavily on her shoulders. “A hug would be nice, actually... I’m just tired.”

“Hey, thanks,” he said with a smile, starting to turn back to his work. “Wait, hold on. I don’t think I caught your name?”
Katherine paused, turning around to face him, returning his smile. “Oh, Katherine Harris, sorry about that. And I’m not wrong in thinking you’re Kinch, right? ‘Cause, if I am, I think I need my eyes checked...” She laughed slightly, shaking her head at her horrible joke.
@rxdiomxn "I guess this is goodbye."
“Yeah, I suppose so,” Kinch says. It feels remarkably hollow for something he’d been so excited about for years. The joy – of course there’s joy, he misses his sisters and proper food and warm water and people who look like him and sound like him and actual pillows – is tempered by a reluctance to let go of the men who had become his family. The more he thinks about it, the more the guilt twists in his chest, because it’s war and he doesn’t know how to separate the sense of belonging and effective change from the realities of hundreds of thousands of deaths.
He pulls himself out of it with some effort. “It was a pleasure serving with you, Colonel,” he says, hoping his sincerity comes across.
Rob gave a slightly forced smile. He knew this feeling. He’d felt it the day he’d gotten into the plane and looked over his crew, knowing he might not see them again. But time was different. This time, everyone was safe and would go home.
Home. A beautiful word.
“Yeah, and you,” he said let a somewhat awkward silence fall between them. Odd, that; silence had always been comfortable with Kinch before. Sighing, he looked around them, anywhere but Kinch’s face while he hands rested on his hips. “Look, I’m not great at this sorta thing but... I’m gonna miss you. It’s been a ride, huh?”

“I said I didn’t care if you got your sex somewhere else,” Kinch corrected. “I didn’t say I was alright with you getting romantically involved with someone else. Or that I was alright with you practically kicking me out so you could go have sex. Or that I was alright with you telling people you weren’t involved with anyone.”
He took a deep breath. “I know I should have been clearer about what I wanted. But if I’m always going to be your second choice because I don’t want to have sex with you, I’m not sure I can do that.”
“Hey, you offered it, remember!,” Rob retorted, feeling hurt in his pride. He wasn’t a cheater, he’d been told it was okay and now somehow Kinch didn’t stand by his word. “If there were ‘but’s and ‘if’s you should’ve said so.”
Unhappily he crossed his arms in front of his chest. “You’re no second choice. But how’re you supposed to have sex without romance? Doesn’t mean I wanna marry them.”

Kinch swallowed hard. “If you want,” he said quietly, and carefully reached out for his colonel. “If you don’t want, that’s okay too,” he hastened to add. “It’s up to you.”
Rob just smirked. “Kinch, have you ever seen me not want to kiss someone,” he asked jokingly, trying to get the other man to relax a little. Sneaking his arm around his middle, he pulled Kinch closer until their chests were pressed together but he didn’t move in for a kiss yet, just looked at him with a gentle, albeit still midly amused expression. “Though I gotta say I’ve had more enthusiastic replies to that question in the past.”

Kinch crumpled the note in his hand into a tight ball. Damn it! There had always been a sick certainty in the back of his mind that someday it would come to this, but he had always hoped it never would.
As soon as they were dismissed from formation, he gathered the others. “We’re moving out,” he said, face set and grim. “Leaving. Abandoning ship. Going home.”
It was surreal, for a while. He felt like he was floating about six inches above his own body, as he packed up the radio and started helping LeBeau with the fabrics and thread. There was nothing he could do except keep going through the motions, keep pretending everything was fine and that Colonel Hogan would be back any time now. But it was too quiet, too tense.
Once the last barracks filed out through the emergency tunnel, it was just Kinch, Carter, Newkirk and LeBeau left. “Go on,” Kinch said. “I need to grab one more thing.”
He knew what he had to do.
The longer he didn’t break the longer his men had to get out of Germany. That was what kept him going.
Rob learned very quickly upon his arrival that there was a world of difference between being interrogated based upon vague suspicion and what he was in for this time. They knew. They knew far too much and they didn’t have a hint of a doubt about it. He was done for. All they cared about was to get as much information out of him as possible before he became useless to them. If he stalled them just long enough for his men to be safe, then he’d done his job.
Only that was easier said than done. Everybody had their breaking point and Rob felt himself edge closer and closer to his with every hour that passed during the Gestapo’s “friendly interrogation”.
Groaning in pain Rob lowered his body down onto the sad excuse of a sleeping cot in his cell. They’d given him a break. Probably because he kept fainting anyway and what use was that? He had no idea how much time had passed, only knew it felt like years and that every single part of his body screamed in pain. Barely knowing how to lie down he settled for an uncomfortably angled position on the side so he didn’t have to put pressue on his wounds and bruises or his swollen face.
Just a little while longer. Just until his men were safe. Just until then.
