Why I don't like The Dishonored Wolf
For the longest time, I thought Confused Matthew was one of the most biased YouTubers on the platform. That is, until I discovered The Dishonored Wolf and his review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Judging by the title alone, I knew it wasn't going to be a good review (not good as in positive, good as in well thought out and fair like Adam from YourMovieSucksDotOrg); but right as he started talking, that's when I knew I was in for wild ride. At more than a half hour in length, the review was full of some of the most shallow, baseless and factually wrong arguments against a movie I have ever had the displeasure of listening to. Arguments like "the main character is a Mary Sue (even though the film proves otherwise" "the film commits character assassination (when in actuality it doesn't)" "it's an insult to fans (despite the director BEING a fan)" and so much more. I'm amazed I actually sat through that video when I could've saved myself the trouble and exit stage left. But it's not just this video I had a problem with, some of his other videos rubbed me the wrong way as well. His video on the problem with strong female characters would've been insightful had he not use the infamous "Rey is a Mary Sue" argument and claim that's not how you make a strong female character. That's right folks, if you're a writer and you want a strong female character, don't give her basic skills in language, combat, or operating a machine; and we can't give her complexity or put her through an arc, no siree. Make her naive, a limp noddle and a complete ditz; like Olive Oyl. Then there's his rant on Marvel movies which was just a bore. Oh look, some dude doesn't like Marvel movies, but instead of being fair and giving credit where credit is due, he gives shallow and biased arguments like "they're all the same" "the villians suck" "they're predictable and boring." I didn't even bother finishing his Thor: Ragnarok review after 2 minutes because it's clear that he has no interest in giving credit to these movies. Sure, he said liked a few of the MCU films, but he also claims that he's seen movies that are better. Opinions are opinions, of course, but just because there are movies you like more than the MCU, that doesn't mean the MCU movies are without merit. Speaking of stuff he likes, he recently made a video talking about them; or should I say skimming through them because he rushed through them and passed the video off as something to silence comments telling him he's too negative on stuff. He also said he couldn't riff on the things he likes as much as the things he didn't; uhh, so? If you just want to talk about the things you like, then talk about the things you like and explain why they're worth recommending. And of course there's the infamous "I do it for the views" argument. Many people have said this before and I can easily see why: views shouldn't be the main reason why you make videos. It should be a fun little hobby you do that just so happens to get alot of people's attention. The fact that you get any attention at all should be rewarding enough. Overall, I dare say The Dishonored Wolf is worse than Confused Matthew because while Matthew isn't perfect, at least he's fair (these days, that is) in his reviews and at least he's not always negative to the point where he makes a video of things he likes just to silence people who rightfully tell him he's too negative. If you're a follower of him, just know that I have no qualms with you or him as a person. I just don't like his content :/
