Well Hot Dog! As Mickey would say! Where does the time go? I can't believe it's been yet another year as a #DisneyCastMember My story begins on June 10th 2010, at the most magical place on earth; Epcot- Walt Disney World! and in the 9yrs since then I have worked some amazing roles including the honor of being a Disneyland Resort Cast Member during the 60th Anniversary Diamond Celebration! Fast forward to now, and I am back where it all began, Walt Disney World! It's been a very happy, sad, angry, stressful, and best of all, MAGICAL experience! Working for Disney has taught me the true values of being a human! I have had the honor of meeting folks from all around the world, of all different race and ethnicities; some visiting for their first time, some for their last. I have made so many life long friends, even the love of my life! Ive made countless #UnforgettableDisneyMemories that I will hold dear to my heart for the rest of time! One of my favorite parts about being a Cast Member is simply the ability to continue/keep Walt's legacy alive! The Encore Chorale and Encore Pops Orchestra will be presenting their production of “When You Imagine: The Music of Disney” on May 17th and May 18th. Journey through the history of Disney music and hear it come alive in a concert filled with memorable songs that will make your heart soar. It’s an adventure that can only happen ‘When You Imagine.’

Performances will be held at Freedom High School in Orlando, FL. The magic begins at 7:30 pm each evening. Tickets will be $20 general admission, and will go on sale Tuesday, April 16th. You are able to buy tickets online until 12pm on the day of each show, or you may purchase tickets at the door for $25.

The Globe’s Night Off

Nichole, a friend I had met in California before making the move to Florida, and I realized we hadn’t gotten together to hang out in a while. It was hard to find time. She was a character attendant and I worked merchandise, so we never crossed paths. With that, we were also having completely different experiences. She was finishing off her second college program, anxiously awaiting the end so she could transfer to something more permanent within the company. I was anxiously awaiting the end of my program because I couldn’t wait to get out. I noticed that sometimes that difference separates people. There are times when people who want to be Cast Members forever feel as though they are better than the person who is ready to do something else. They say condescending things like, “Oh it’s okay sweetie, not everybody is fit to be a Cast Member” and “Not everybody is cut out for the hard work Disney requires”. It amazes me how a difference in interests and passions can divide people so clearly, but it happened often. I knew Nichole was enjoying her program, and I was fearful to talk to her about my realization that this road was not meant to be taken any further. I never thought she’d be condescending or mean about it, but I was worried I’d somehow hurt her feelings by not loving working for the company as much as she did. I planned to bring it up with her during our next hangout session, which happened to be dinner around the world before an unexpectedly interesting show of illumiNations.

It had been a while since I had seen illumiNations, but honestly it was one of my favorite shows on any Disney property. Nichole’s favorite spot to see the show is in the Italy pavilion, so we headed there for some food and to find a seat. The International Flower & Garden Festival was still going on, so a kiosk right outside the Italy pavilion offered some small samples that were perfect for small dinners. We got our food, had a seat, and talked about life. While Nichole wasn’t able to completely understand what I was going through because she had never been in a position at Disney that she didn’t enjoy, she was sympathetic. She knew me, knew that I was working hard and putting my best foot forward, and knew that it was about far more than how much work it was. We talked roommates, work places, relationships, and more before the announcement came on letting everybody know the show was starting. 

The torches around the world went out and the show began. Since it had been so long since I had seen it, I didn’t notice a difference right away. It didn’t start out as powerful as it usually did though, and I was worried that yet another magical Disney thing I loved was being tainted by my less-than-stellar work experience. It was only a few seconds into the show, but Nichole and I realized that the globe was off. The spinning globe that sits in the middle of the World Showcase Lagoon is supposed to shine brightly of images from around the world, illuminating in the shape of the continents. But not once did the globe light up. Disney is usually pretty great about stopping shows for inconveniences such as this. I have no idea what the protocol for illumiNations is, but it seemed really horrible to have this big black sphere spin in the middle of the lagoon doing absolutely nothing. It was so dark on the lagoon that you couldn’t really see the globe, until fireworks flashed around it and made it obvious that the globe was really there and was supposed to be doing something. Nichole and I spent the whole show staring in disbelief and snapping pictures. 

A newlywed couple, still in their wedding dress and tux, stood on a bridge of the Italy Pavilion with a professional photographer, watching the show. I felt so bad for them. The show was not nearly as impressive without the globe working, and for how much money a Disney wedding costs, I imagine the people paying would be pretty disappointed. Although at least they got to see fireworks. I guess it would be more disappointing to not have any show to watch due to technical difficulties.

We laughed through the show, joking about how even the globe of illumiNations needed the night off sometimes.

The laughter was exactly what I needed. I will say though, while some guests may not have even noticed, this was the kind of thing that shattered the illusion that Disney was perfect. As the ones making the magic, we know that not everything can be perfect all the time. Still, we are the ones who love Disney the most. We became Cast Members because we believed that Disney was the best of the best, and when you visit the parks consistently, you start to see the small cracks in that perfection. Those cracks have always existed, but we were blind to them before. Now, as Cast Members looking for things that are out of place in our daily jobs, we see those imperfections and want, so badly, for them to not exist. The more we visit and the better we get at our jobs, the more the imperfections bother us. It is the thing that starts to drive Cast Members away from visiting the parks more. It is not that becoming a Cast Member “ruins the magic”. It is more-so that the imperfections we are seeing bother us to no end, and we are tired of seeing them. We are tired of being surrounded by them. We are tired of having no way to fix them. And so we only face those imperfections at work, and spend our free time elsewhere. While momentarily it provided amusement, it was a sore reminder that things at Disney were seemingly falling apart. They weren’t really, I was just becoming more aware of them, and I wanted to leave before it all looked less-than-perfect to me. 

Still, I was thankful for that night with Nichole. Thinking back to a time where I casually sat in Italy having deep conversation with friends is weird to me. I always say, “I lived such a weird life”. It’s true. Disney living is a weird life. But, when you ignore those imperfections, it’s a pretty magical one with really magical people.
