As Robert finished parking he took a minute to gather himself, holding the steering wheel firmly with both hands he sat with his head laid back trying to calm his nerves. He didn't really want to do this, but he needed to.
“Come on…” Robert whispered, trying to coax himself into letting go of the steering wheel and getting out. He didn't want to leave you, he already felt like he was turning into his father with how much he left you with a babysitter, but now he couldn't even afford one.
He'd blown all his money on his father's suit and he felt ashamed for it, that money was supposed to be yours too. He could have used it for more useful things for you- but no he just had to throw money at that damn death trap.
It made him feel worse than his father, ‘at least he could pay to spoil Robert’, ‘at least he didn't have to move him into crappy one bedroom apartments’ he'd often think to himself, filling him with more and more shame each time.
He couldn't even give you time, the least he could do was give you a comfortable lifestyle and he was failing at that too.

The sound of something hard hitting the center console snapped him out of thought. It was your Keychain toy you had thrown, surprisingly it fully made it onto the console.
Without much thought Robert unbuckled his seat belt and picked up the Keychain, fully turning himself so then he could face you and return the toy like he always did.
“Here ya’ go” he said softly, as he handed it to your awaiting grabby hands, smiling at him you held the toy in both hands, making Robert crack a small smile himself.
Maybe this was his sign… his sign from you that you'd be ok without him, you wouldn't hate him. Maybe.
“Is it... ok if I go?” Robert hesitantly asked, forgetting you couldn't even say daddy yet, but he just felt he had to ask. Maybe you'd understand.
And you responded, you responded by jingling your plastic keys and babbling excitedly. Maybe that was your yes, or maybe you just wanted to throw them at him again. He decided to go with option one.
“Ok then..” he said softly, he was going to try to listen to his 1 year old baby. It made him feel a bit silly but maybe it's what he needed to do.

“Ok, so when will pickup be?” He asked the daycare worker, as he still held you tight. He didn't want to let you go just yet. “pickups will be at 10” she replied shortly as she finished logging them into the computer
“Ah, ok” he quickly replied, adjusting you in his arms, “do they need that bag?” She asked, pointing near his feet at the baby bag he'd brought in. “Oh yeah, here” he said as he bent down halfway to pick it up and handed it to her.
“Ok, you can go ahead and sit them down on that rug over there” she softly said pointing to a round pink rug that already had toy baskets set down awaiting the chubby little hands of babies.
And there's the hard part, now he'd actually have to let you go, now he'd actually have to listen to the response you gave him in the car.
‘Ok Rob, just sit them down on the carpet. It's not that hard. They'll be fine here’ he tried to reassure, as he walked slowly to the rug. Trying to take all the time he could to hold you before he'd have to leave.
When he finally reached the rug he stood still for a minute, still unsure of what he was doing, until he heard a happy squeal come from you.
He looked down and saw you smiling wide and reaching out your little chubby hands towards a basket of blocks.
And there's his second sign, ‘you'll be fine’ he thought for the final time, finally making up his mind, as he gave you a small kiss on the head and lowered himself to put you down.
And when he did you made a b-line for the blocks, leaving him behind faster than he thought you would. Almost hurting his feelings a bit but he knew you didn't mean it.
"Yeah, they'll be fine" he whispered to himself, fully standing back up, and making his way back to the entrance. Giving one last slightly concerned look and wave before exiting.
