[REVIEW] DISPONDANT - ACID JAZZ EP (DEFROSTATICA 12″)
A Few Words from Vincent aka Dispondant about his first physical release, a 6 track vinyl on Defrostica Records
What got you into footwork?
What drew me to the genre is the energy of it and that It has such a wide range of sonic possibilities. It put the fun back into mixing/making music. My friend brought a copy of Bangs&Works vol.1/2 round to my flat on a hard drive and I just going through the trax and it was so fun to mix so I was like ok I want more. I’ve been blessed enough to have had the opportunity to play to multiple crowds in my career and most of the time I’ll have people come to me mid-set asking ‘What is this music?’ And they’ll be screwing their faces and nodding to the beat as they’re asking. So I know people like it but still the majority of people you meet day to day don’t even know about it even though it’s been around for years. I like how underground it is in a way but it would be cool if more people knew about it.
Shout outs
S/O To the homie B3no, he’s one of the best footwork producers in the uk IMO. Well worth checking.
S/O to Rob and Tina (Defrostatica Records) I’m looking forward to continuing working with them and visiting them to play some shows in Leipzig this year.
S/O to everyone who has continually supported my trax over the years, I’ve got way more to music to share with you guys.
This 6 Track EP shows the evolution and growth of Dispondant’s sound over the 6 years he has been producing footwork, its a really mixed bag of grooves with a dark edge and tense atmosphere.
Acid Jazz EP - Track Breakdown
Death
Slow moving textures build and grow around you as spacious footwork beats build up, that iconic 808 cowbell delaying into the background as the the pads rise up around you, just as your really falling deep into a trance, eyes closed and head nodding the carpet is pulled from underneath you and the 808 kicks roll out, slamming the breath from your chest, combined with an anarchic stab this explains the song title.. ruthless, i cant wait to see how this hits a dancefloor in the club
Controller Weapon
No messing about with this one, Dispondant goes straight for the jugular with a well distorted acid lead and rolling kicks, wicked switches bring in a fierce reese and skattered hats pulling you away before driving you back into the fire. the mid breakdown has the most unreal theremin/80s porno funk synth on the go, twinned with that rough n ready mid it takes you on a journey behind your eyelids
Warehouse Acid
A chunky halfstep beat with starchy clap start the beat off as the acid lead builds up with randomised oscilatting squelches. He’s really encapsulated the warehouse sound with all the big verby metallic hits and the chunky foley bangs n clangs… this beat has a slowly evolving autonomic feel, constantly bringing in new textures and rhythms, but with no surprise’s it all just gradually rolls you along very nicely.
Acid Jazz
Here’s were Dispondant really lets his hair down, sampling some really loose vibey breaks and coming in with really nice loose pads and chords… the beat grows with gated synth work adding the footwork kinda tempo back in…… claps, clicks, kicks and pops push and pull with there rhythms, spacious and then suddenly ramping up with footworky grooves to push till the next transition.. constant evolution
Jazz Solo
Sultry pads, gated risers and endless clicks and pops fill the space in a gentle vibesy way, setting your emotions on there journey onwards and upwards.. poppy metallic snares play against classic 808s to get the beat rolling forwards with the classic yo yo yo delays filling the space. this ones definately the melancholy chilled member of the gang, lean back and smoke some of the finest while your mind wanders.
Sanctum
This one really pulls at the heartstrings, that classic music box kinda pluck, the effortless woypwoyp and that really nice pad.. this ones like 360degree headnod to hiphop synth work, so nice… add in the halftime clap and you got a perfect end to the ep. when the footworky kicks roll in, it still keeps its emotional minimal feeling because its not aggresive, just a nice rhythmic kicky pop cutting through above the sub
