Older Women are Taking Over Hollywood…. So Listen Up!
By Bonnie Burton
Get a room full of women over 45 together, and I promise you not only hear workplace war stories but you'll end up bonding in a special way that comes from a lifetime of being the only woman in the room.
I was honored to be invited along with 20 other women to a special “Age of Influence: Activating Hollywood” salon hosted by AARP Director of Audience & Influencer Engagement Karen Chong and the creator of #OscarsSoWhite hashtag campaign April Reign (Reignofapril.com).
I was initially intimidated by the talented women I found myself chatting with -- movie directors, comedians, actors, TV showrunners, lawyers, activists, agents, journalists, researchers and studio executives.
What I discovered was that no matter where we all were on the ladder of success, we all shared the same frustrations with ageism, sexism and in some cases racism in the entertainment industry.
We all worked incredibly hard to get where we are today. And we all face the same kind of nagging insecurities and stress that comes with often being not just being the only woman in the room, but sometimes being the oldest person in the room.
I know that at age 46 I find myself being told I don’t have my pulse on the youth demographic because I’m old enough to be their mother. Or I have too much experience to be considered for a job.
I worked at a gaming company where I was older than the CEO by 10 years. I often go to comic book conventions where people ask me if I’m there to pick up my kid. I don’t have kids. But when you’re a woman of a certain age, apparently you can’t appreciate superheroes and video games unless you have kids in tow.
As we introduced ourselves around the table at the dinner, these accomplished women told their stories about overcoming poverty, racism and sexism to get where they were today. There was a commonality in the struggle. Many of us nodded our heads when our lives seemed to be mirrored in another woman's stories.
It was beyond inspiring to hear about single moms putting themselves through college while raising young kids. Another woman talked about being the first in her family to become a successful entrepreneur. Others talked about their rocky road to becoming execs or accomplished directors.
What I admired most about these women was their moxie, their persistence and their willingness to risk everything to follow their dreams. These women learned to embrace change, evolve and not take no for an answer -- at any age.
We went around the table to offer up our own mantras that help remind us to never give up on our goals, no matter how old we are. Hearing these mantras from women in their late and older made me realize that I have a right to be heard. Believing in ourselves makes a world of difference.
Here’s some of the mantras I feel like painting on walls all over Hollywood:
“Embarrass people with my abilities when they underestimate me.”
“We are invited to the table, but now we need to run the room.”
“Know your value.”
“Dreaming is a form of planning.”
“Stop making a meal out of crumbs.”
“Remain relentless.”
“We need to be women of vision.”
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
“Don’t wait for permission to follow your dreams.”
“Have the audacity and capacity to succeed.”
“I will not shrink myself to make someone else feel better.”
“Have reckless confidence.”
These mantras were shared both at this intimate dinner, but also on social media to remind older women everywhere that we have something important to say. We can create positive change. Older women have stories worth sharing.
We have experiences others can learn from.
We need to disrupt myths about women of a certain age.
We deserve to be heard.
We are at an Age of Influence, and we’re not going away.
So pay attention and you might learn something.
Visit DisruptAging.org to find out why what you do after 50 can be just as amazing as what you've done before 30, and why you can reinvent yourself at any age.

Finishing the last 26.2 Miles after 2,273 Miles Training
I remember being at my grandmothers funeral 20 years ago while standing on crutches and telling one of my cousins that I was going to run a marathon before I turned 40. As soon as my broken leg heals I will train for that marathon. I was 36 years old.

I did try to run. I even ran a few races. My favorite race was the New Years Midnight Run in New York…
