-clears his throat lightly and looks off into the distance with a hum-

He finds the pack of menthols in passing-- by chance, more than anything. The corner store and cafe is one of his usual haunts, but he's back in town to pick up groceries, already cussing at himself for failing to remember to do so earlier. The pack of smokes and a note are sitting atop the very table over which he'd shared a few words with the stranger. There's no particular reason why he assumes the pack is for him, but he pockets it nonetheless, glancing over his shoulder as he retreats to his car.
