The smallest units in phonology are the distinctive features, even smaller than the individual phonemes & allophones.  They show how different sounds are or aren't related, and include voicing, manner of articulation and place of articulation.

Distinctive features can be identified by taking two contrasting phonemes and comparing them with the above criteria.  For example:
