Hugo D. Villa’s “Pájaro Brujo.”

Currently on view at Beinart Gallery in Melbourne, Australia is artist Hugo D. Villa’s solo exhibition, “Pájaro Brujo.”

The title of the exhibition refers to the popular belief of the "Nahual,” indigenous wise men who, due to the strong connection they have with their animal spirit, have the ability to transform into it, or even into other animals or atmospheric elements. Each painting shows beings in transformation, not unlike the Nahuales, merging with elements of nature or unexpected textures that emanate from their interior: a change of skin, perhaps the reflection of new experiences. At the same time they insinuate a somatization of emotions, like someone who decides to look inward to discover himself, find the root of his own feelings, achieve an internal transformation, merge with the universe and discover his own light.
