You Won’t Believe These Are Real: 3 Odd Jobs That Earn a Paycheck
What dothese three things have in common? Spinning balls. Quoting Lady Gaga’sdeposition against her former assistant. Blending a smoothie with a bicycle. The thread that connects these questionable acts is that they’re all jobs. Like, real jobs that real people do and collect a paycheck for. Naturally, we wanted to learn more because in the world of District Perrier anything is possible. Let’s introduce you to three people with highly intriguing professions
Tamberla Perry
Meet Tamberla Perry: Illinois Lottery Hostess. She spins balls. Naturally, she’s quite recognizable from this position, so we asked her if she’s stopped a lot on the street. “Street, all the time, it’s the funerals that are awkward.” she says with a laugh. “Imagine people walking up to view a body and there I am sitting in my seat—at a funeral, when a woman walks to the casket but stops short to say right to me, ‘I know you, you didn’t pull my damn numbers last night!’ What do you say to that?”
Alas, people are always going to blame this beauty for not pulling her numbers, but to make matters more complicated, she once had several people on the edges of their seats, their future in her confused hands. “When I first started working lottery a few years ago, I had a really hard time telling the difference between the numbers six and nine. One time I was announcing the Pick-4 numbers and said, ‘Your third winning number is six! Nope, that’s a nine! No, no, wait, it’s a six! Actually, it’s definitely a nine!’ Super embarrassing!”
When Perry isn’t spinning balls she can be found performing at Chicago’s legendary Steppenwolf and Lookingglass Theaters, as well as a guest on Chicago Fire.
Jack Ferver
Meet Jack Ferver. That Guy from the Starburst Commercial. Ferver managed to get paid to wear a leprechaun suit and inspire the nation to copy his little berries and cream dance. If that weren’t cool enough, his day job is now playing Lady Gaga in Chambre with the American Dance Institute. “I begin the work by playing Lady Gaga, using text from her deposition from when she was sued by her former assistant. I then shift into playing the maid Christine Papin working with her sister Léa. They long to return back to France, and there is a section in the work where they pretend to escape to Paris for a new life, after murdering their employer. However the Madame returns and the fantasy crumbles.” Ferver explains. “The work savagely and humorously — albeit darkly explores themes of otherness, class issues, gender, and celebrity. The violence, both internally and externally from being a minority. The growing tension between the haves and have nots. The visual artist, Marc Swanson, made the incredible installation we perform in.”
Ryan Carpenter
Meet Ryan Carpenter. Biking Smoothie-Maker and Owner of Moberi, the original bike-powered smoothie bar and as seen on ABC’s Shark Tank. "My greatest fear is spraining an ankle. That would make my job very difficult." Says Carpenter, who spends his days pedaling bikes to create healthy smoothies, and rock climbing when he gets a free minute. Carpenter first came up with the idea while washing dishes at hostel in Australia. A friend showed him a video of a Guatemalan village that was using old bikes to power machines for everything from mixing concrete to husking corn. Carpenter says, "It clicked immediately. I had been looking for something unique, healthy, and fun. Bicycle blended smoothies on the streets of Portland was perfect."
There you have it, three cool and seriously odd jobs. Now tell us, what’s the weirdest job you’ve held?
