Repost Vol. 39: December 5th, 2006 - “Music as a Weapon”
Here’s the thirty-ninth in a series of re-posted articles from my old Myspace blog. See this for more explanation.
Another concert post, man, 2006 was a good year for going to rock shows. Ten years ago, my cousin Robert and I went see the Music as a Weapon tour in Biloxi. I remember being impressed by the size of the production and really enjoying all 4 acts. Here’s my decade-old take on what went down that night. As always, pics were added in post.
The title of this blog pretty much tells you exactly what its about. My cousin Robert (see top 8) and I went to Disturbed's Music as a Weapon show this weekend on in Biloxi. While the tickets were a bit over priced the show was great! Of all the music that was played by all 4 bands. There was only one song I didn't know. So needless to say I was a bit hoarse when I left the show. I'm gonna break the show down by group, to let you know how things went down.
Nonpoint
Now, keep in mind I have been a pretty serious/casual Nonpoint fan for 6 years now and I went into the show not knowing what to expect. Because just between you and me Nonpoint's second two albums sucked ass (compared to thier first and latest.) I was scared that they were going to pack the concert full of shit I really didn't want to hear. I was really wrong. They played "Mindtrip," "What A Day," "Victim," and "Endure" from thier first CD and "Alive and Kicking" and "Bullet With a Name" from thier new album. This could possibly be the perfect set list(it's only missing thier cover of "In the Air Tonight")
Flyleaf
Another band that I didn't know what to expect from them. Lacey Mosley, the singer, came out on stage to start the show and all I could think was, damn she's tiny. However, that bitch can sing! Aside from her voice going out during "I'm So Sick." She hit pretty much every note. (That can't be said for Nonpoint) Most band's live shows are just a reciting of the songs they have become known for, but Flyleaf did a good job of putting you in the song, rather than just having you listen to it. They played most of thier CD, so of the highlights were. "Cassie," "Fully Alive," "Breathe Today" and "I'm Sorry"
Stone Sour
I've seen Slipknot live before, and wasn't too impressed, so going into this show I had some preconceptions. But, to contradict this conceptions, I am liking the new Stone Sour CD more than anything Slipknot has ever done. Stone Sour had a very polished sound to there show, and the two acoustic songs sandwiched between straight rock was nice. I did not like there choice for closing track. "Get Inside" is not that good of a song and definately not good enough to clase a show with. If I was Corey Tayler, I would have finished with "Come (What)ever May" Overall I was very pleased with thier show, even though Corey Taylor's hair made him look like a Michael Bolton/Lane Staley/Ted Nugent hybrid. The highlights were "Bother," "Your God," "30/30-150" and "Inhale"
Disturbed!
Finally Disturbed take the stage, and after starting with a weak performance of "Gaurded" it sounded like David Draiman's voice was broken in and ready to go. "Liberate" started the ass kicking and it didn't stop until "Down with the Sickness." They tore through all their hits, like "Stupify," "Remember," "Prayer," "Voices," "Stricken," and "Land of Confusion." Just the shear amount of of great material Disturbed has warrants going to the concert. They had the expected pyro and popping sounds that you see with most major rock concerts. I had seen Disturbed before and knew that they can put on a damn good show. They did not disappoint. They really suprised me when they played "Overburdened." It's the only ballad-like song they have ever written and it felt really good getting goosebumps while they played it. If you ever get a chance to see Disturbed, go and don't wear anything too expensive, it will probably get stained. Highlights (other than the aforementioned hits): "Ten Thousand Fists," and "Sons of Plunder"
