Sewing diary 7/27/24
Amarena dress is on pause for now. Was not loving how the muslin was turning out on my hips. I will probably keep the bodice construction (which has great darts for large chests!) and sleeves but completely hack the skirt.
I have been working this week on the Sewing Therapy Tie Dress, which looks very flattering on the creator (above) and on some other people on Instagram. It did not look flattering on me, even two sizes down. Thank goodness I made a test muslin!
So! I finally thought fuck it, these are my clothes I can make them the way I want. I took the paper pattern and compared it to a couple of similarly constructed dresses from Uniqlo that I love and that I think fit me well.
I cut the side panel to take out about five inches overall and give it a waistline and a curve from the waist to the armhole. It was previously a completely straight line from armpit to skirt, which looked awful untied and bunched oddly when tied at the sides.
I also cinched the skirt in the same amount at the waistband then graded it out to give it a lot more fullness, probably six inches all together, plus a few inches extra length. This makes sense because I am several inches taller than the creator. I also deepened the V of the neckline, again using a dress I like as the model.
I half-ass tested this new waistline and side seam on my muslin and it seems like it'll work out. I am unfortunately out of muslin fabric now so I can't cut another one with my new pattern pieces to fully test it. I think I'm just going to cut into my main fabric and pray....
Speaking of, I have this GORGEOUS Merchant and Mills Tartlet Stripe Linen as my real fabric. It's sold out on their site so I got it from an independent shop. I loooooove it and am hopeful that I bought enough to also get a shirt out of it after this dress. We'll see.
Wish me luck!
We’re finally getting furniture and decor for our guest room (so exciting to have a guest room!) and we just hung this quilt that my partner’s grandmother made.
I love her work. Every quilt is entirely by hand- every seam, every quilting stitch she entirely hand sews. Her work is so different from mine but I find it so inspiring, particularly this piece. I love this star block, and might do something similar with the leftover reds from my churn dash quilt.
Look what I can do!! This thing is so loud and fast it honestly scares me BUT it came pre-threaded and is mad easy to use. Very happy so far!
2023 recap! It feels weird to say I didn’t craft that much this year, when I also graduated law school, took (and passed!) the bar, moved across the state, started my dream job, and got engaged to my best friend.
In truth I worked on a few bigger projects, like my Iceland EPP quilt and the red churn dash quilt. I am a very slow sewer but I don’t mind it.
I hope 2024 is kinder, slower, and full of joy and creativity for us all <3
Who would be interested in buying 8 stripe gay flag quilted coasters? All money going to an LGBT+ rights charity
Me!
No thanks, but happy Pride!
If you answered yes, DM me! I’m thinking $20 for a set of 2 and $40 for a set of 4
I have purchased this fabric (Berry Lotus Seed Block Print cotton from Merchant & Mills) to make the Amarena Dress by Liesl & Co in view B.
I also bought muslin for the first time ever because I really don’t want to mess up my beautiful cotton if I fuck up the first time. The sizing in the pattern seems very small to me, I’m never size 12 in anything…so the muslin is also to help decide the correct size to make.
Wish me luck!
I (finally!) have time to sew whatever I choose again. I’d like to sell some things for charity. Would you be interested in commissioning me for any of the following:
What would you commission?
Coaster set (choose colors and pattern)
Baby blanket (choose colors and vibe)
Something else? Tell me!
None for me, thanks!
If you are interested in any of these please DM! I have the next two days off work and I’m itching to sew!
A set of four coasters could be as low as $40 for two colors and no pattern or up to $100 for more complex work. DM to discuss blanket pricing
