Diva (1981) réalisateur Jean-Jacques Beineix
Movie of the Day: Diva
It's still weird to me that this movie hasn't been discovered over and over again. Part film noir, part giallo, part art house, part pop art... this is a stylish thriller and one of the best films of the 1980s. And it's about an audiophile who is obsessed with an opera singer and finds himself embroiled in an organized crime plot.
The directorial debut of Jean-Jacques Beineix, the producers of the film actually hated it. They wanted a tight thriller in what was then the typical style of French movies: realism. Beineix instead let his film run wild, going for bright colors and a melodic, baroque style that was exaggerated, larger than life. When the film was released in France on March 11, 1981 (45 years ago today), it was a commercial failure; French critics were openly hostile to it. It wasn't until the film was met with acclaim in the US that the film was reassessed by the French audience and became very popular. It played in French cinemas for a year and won four Cesar Awards, including for the idiosyncratic cinematography by the great Philippe Rousselot.
