The Lady Miz Diva does not give a title to her recent, epic-length review of The World’s End. While this may prevent the work from becoming a household name, there was never very much risk of that happening.
Bathed in pink and shamelessly self-promoting, The Diva Review waxes eloquent about what elements make the critic enjoy the film. This makes for a very self-serving and indulgent experience. Long, rambling sentences often return to the critic’s seemingly favorite subject, herself.
It’s a shame because she shows a real knack for comedic and self-aware writing, particularly in her opening paragraph which successfully skewers and encompasses what the film is about at its core.
The main problem is that there is just too much review for the value it contains. At 1250 words, readers expect something profound, relevant, and engaging. Diva Velez’s work is none of these. An unbelievable amount of time is spent on the soundtrack, and while portions of the discussion are enjoyable, it’s this type of indulgence that drags this bloated piece down.
Once the review concludes, a much more interesting interview with Edgar Wright is included as an Easter Egg. This may justify the price of admission. Even though the critic insists that Edgar Wright also spend a lot of his space discussing the soundtrack, his personal insights make it inestimably more interesting.
