Or, how Scaramouche joined the Fatui
“Having trouble, Dottore?”
Kazuo’s head snapped around toward the doorway, where Pedrelino stood, leaning against the doorjamb. “Leave this one to me, yes?” they said, staring down their junior with those uncanny red eyes.
“Ah, Pedrelino,” he sneered. “Right when I thought I was making some progress with him. Her Majesty’s favorite comes in to save the day.”
“You can take up any issues you have with my interfering with Her Majesty.”
“What good would that do?” he grumbled, standing. Neither Harbinger moved out of the other’s way, so their shoulders bumped as Dottore exited.
Pedrelino shot Kazuo an apologetic look as they came and took Dottore’s seat. “He’s the worst,” they said, “wholly inconsiderate, and overworks everyone. It was good of you to take over the medical wards. It’s been a lot of help.”
They were buttering him up, and they knew they weren’t being subtle.
“I’m not interested in joining the Fatui.”
“Perhaps,” they agreed, “but Her Majesty has already acknowledged you.”
“And Barbatos you,” Kazuo replied stiffly. “You’re no Knight of Favonius.”
“No,” they agreed again, “I’m not. But I do have special permission to divulge some information that might entice you.”
“What on earth could get me to join you lot?”
Pedrelino’s mouth tugged into a smile. It was off-putting, how fantastically normal they seemed, especially in comparison to Kazuo’s current custodian. “Her Majesty’s cruel irony grants Visions in times of heartbreak,” they said without answering his question. “A young girl whose father doesn’t come home at night, a final fight between siblings, even an adeptus at the dawn of a new era.” They paused, inspecting him. “And, once, a young man standing on a mountain overlooking Inazuma, watching the sun rise through the snow, and realizing the country he loved was no more.”
Kazuo tried to hide how he flinched. They said such kind things in such a warm voice, but their eyes were steely like everyone else in their country. “What can the Fatui do for an Inazuma that is already lost?” he asked, hoping they wouldn’t notice the shaking in his voice.
Their smile, he realized, never reached their eyes. “Her Majesty wants to burn down the world and start anew. Help us and rebuild your Inazuma.”
