I am of the opinion that Hylia is the little sister, and Demise is just That Random Hated Enemy. Who knows where he came from, certainly not Nintendo.
Light spirits are lesser deities, in my opinion. Like, the Golden Goddesses are the Big Three, and then there’s tiny little gods in between that do things like guard a pond and maybe pass on worship every once in a while.

That aside, I took a look at Malon and Marin’s official artwork, and they actually don’t look very similar at all. If you’re hoping for a Lore Freakout, I don’t think this would be enough to get him going, sorry.
