I’m genuinely curious, what IS the procedure for divorcing someone who’s gone on the lam? Is Aaron stuck legally married to John until he dies or gets caught by the police? It’s impossible to serve someone with divorce papers if they’re a fugitive from justice, surely.
At some point, if John never surfaces again, could Aaron divorce him in absentia for abandonment and/or trying to murder him? Or have him declared legally dead? Here in Canada, I think you can have someone declared dead after 7 years. No idea how long someone would’ve had to be absent in order to be eligible for a unilateral divorce, though. And I doubt Aaron wants to be tied to John for the next 7 years.
How would their assets be divided? John must have inherited that creepy cottage in the woods (with ensuite bunker for handy kidnapping and torture purposes) from his late mother. Does Aaron own or rent the flat at the Mill? I can’t remember at the moment, since The Mill has a rather complicated ownership history.
Of course, I fully expect that John won’t simply disappear forever into the mists of Rotterdam. He will of course return to Emmerdale within a few months seeking vengeance. Either someone from the village will kill him or he’ll be shot by an armed response team. I suspect someone from the village. It’s more dramatic than some anonymous police sniper we’ll never see again.
And John’s death will either be genuinely in self defence, or whoever does it will claim self defence and the police will probably believe them. Since he is a dangerous fugitive and all. But Aaron doesn’t realize they live in a soap. So surely he must be wondering how to stop being married to John.
